As a federal republic we don't really do wholesale referendums. That's more akin to direct democracy than representative government. California does have that at the state level, they call them propositions. This is as powerful as it is dangerous. Recently California tried to remove civil rights clauses from their state constitution that were interfering with woke agendas through such a referendum. It didn't pass but it very easily could have. The federal government (and most states) doesn't use this as a legislative method because it's so fickle.

That and the Great Compromise (all states get 2 Senators but Representatives are population based) alongside other aspects of the Founding Fathers' wisdom like the Electoral College (popular vote plays second fiddle to Electors which vote based on their state's candidate decision) make mob rule somewhat difficult in America.

Direct democracy is beautiful in theory but it translates poorly into reality. It's akin to two wolves and a sheep asking "what's for dinner"?

You have the right to personal autonomy, doesn't mean you don't have to deal with the consequences of your autonomy.
Condoms are cheap, free even at planned parenthood, birth control is easily available, abstinence is completely free, and even forgoing vaginal sex, but I guess this concept is too difficult to handle.

This ruling doesn't make abortion illegal.
It strikes down a previous interpretation of abortion as protected under the US Constitution, which it is not.

Of course, you've outed yourself as a foreigner so expecting you to understand anything about the US is wasteful folly...
