To me, Disney died with the early 80's and Eisner's rise to power.
Probably going to come off as generous, but I would say 2015.

I probably have too since my favorite Disney films came after that era being Wreck-It Ralp and The Nightmare Before Christmas, both of which are pretty experimental compared to the formula @skykiii brought up. Even going beyond that, Disney was at least experimental in the 2000s and early 10s. Shit on Kingdom Hearts, but that type of idea would never fly nowadays, same with other things like Epic Mickey. Nowadays, Disney sucks as they are just a big media figure that owns shit and flaunts it. The creative endeavors are rare.

Apparently, Lightyear nesoberis (lying down plushes) will be a thing:

I honestly don't know who would even purchase these, as the eyes look off-putting. I can't imagine diehard Disney Stans purchasing them either, maybe. At least the Love Live! ones, which made nesoberi plushes popular, look charming due to the simple eye designs:

My biggest problem is their movies have, in a lot of ways, not really changed since the 1990s. Sure, they use CGI instead of traditional animation, but their stories are basically the same now as ever, except for they like subverting ancient fairy tale tropes now (something which any edgy teen has been doing on the internet since the 1990s).
I agree.

I think if Disney wants to pull in more money, they need to take risks with their stories instead of playing it safe. ‘No risk, no reward’, you know.

Hard disagree there.

Wreck-It Ralph deserves more love, it's a really great movie and as much as people pine for 2D animated movies, it never would've worked without the 3D animation.

Well, we'll see in 30 years once they finish all the remakes. It's seriously like someone accidentally unearthed a Native American burial ground at Disney World and they're cursed to do this for all time.

Turner and Hooch fucking really.

Well, it's official - 65% second weekend decline for Lightyear, exactly the same as what Solo did in its second weekend back in 2018. Except that that movie somehow actually still came #1 in its second weekend; Lightyear finished #5, so this is really more Star Trek: Nemesis territory.

Also, Top Gun Maverick finished in top place, beating Elvis by $176. Yes, that's right, one hundred and seventy-six dollars.

Besides the sheer disgusting act of a billion dollar corporation trying to take over niche merchandise due to outright lack of originality, those are all bad in looks (besides the generic cat). The original dolls are pretty clearly laid back and cutesy while Disney version is just unsettling faces.

SEGA is making those Lightyear nesoberi plushes. I do wonder if Disney has to pay SEGA to make them, or if it's the other way around.

And yes, the Lightyear ones look bad, compared to the other nesoberis that SEGA makes.

If Lightyear is at $88M now, it might not even finish at $110M. Minions 2 comes out on Friday and then Thor 3 in two weeks.

Lightyear will be on Disney+ when the usual 30-45 day period occurs after release and will probably never be mentioned again.

This is a bomb. There's no good way to spin any of this.

There is something weirdly entertaining seeing a movie bomb at the box office,

I remember it getting a lot of praise at the time of release though, especially compared to whatever Pixar offering was competing against it. It's a ok film, but can't say I've ever thought of it as being underrated.

I will agree though that the 3D animation made perfect sense given the video game based world of that film.

Out of all the Pixar films they could've sent to theaters I'm baffled as to why the fuck they'd pick this one? The premise sounds like one of those iffy direct-to-DVD movies they used to do, I can't imagine it having that broad of appeal compared to the others. The only thing I sort of see is brand recognition, and I say sort of, because I'd question how much brand recognition the Lightyear name on its own has compared to Toy Story.

Sing 2 is the highest grossing animated film to be released since the pandemic began and that made $160 million. That’s not bad, but it’s also $110 million less than the first one. Disney and Pixar animated films are usually budgeted at around $150-200 million and they are petrified of sending something out there to die. Encanto fizzled out when it was released in theaters and then Disney saw it blow up massively when it was released on their streaming service 30 days later, which was a release strategy that was heavily advertised and reported upon. They clearly thought Lightyear would be the safest choice, and audiences started returning to theaters en masse when Spider-Man was released. I can almost guarantee you that if Sonic 2 had flopped, Disney would have either delayed Lightyear or just thrown it on Disney+

It's not a bad idea to have a buzz centered movie. But when Buzz isn't even the main character and the plot is so weirdly serious and intersteller lite inbetween all this woke crap?

I was really surprised the audiences caught on and told it to go fuck itself. Just watch the original buzz lightyear movie.
