Scalzi gets a pass because he's prostrated himself enough times on social media for them all to know he's one of the good ones who knows his place beneath the POCs. You can succeed as a white man in the modern industry provided you signal enough times how you don't deserve your success when there's so many POCs who are more deserving. Pay sufficient lip service and they'll keep off your back while you cash your checks.I agree. But I'm referring to a non-apology - 'sucks this thing happened to you' rather than taking any responsibility, though I understand the mob doesn't often care to recognise the difference. Clementine likely wouldn't have taken Scalzi's apology if she didn't have Pat's condescension allowing her to double down on taking offence.
Also, I don't think Pat's not apologising because of that sensible reason. I think he's not saying sorry because he just won't say it. He's never sorry, child, even taking 'sorry' to mean 'I have sympathy that this bad thing happened to you' rather than 'I regret the actions I have taken to cause this situation'.
I'm saying Pat lacks not only basic empathy, but also the basic social skills to understand that these women want to feel validated. He wouldn't come off as so antagonistic if he pandered to their very obvious victim complex by feigning sympathy that they saw nono words allegedly from him. Allegedly, to him, these should be innocent victims of his atalkers, and yet he won't even performatively apologise for them getting caught in the crossfire.
It's why I think he has a personal credo to never apologise, like it's some hallmark of true manhood to live unapologetically. It's also why it's so funny that he masquerading as right wing while trying to get in with the SJWs, because he is everything they think should apologise just for existing.
As you say, Pat is not very good at paying lip service. I don't think Pat's wrong when he says he's conservative - not in the grand scheme of politics, but by the standards of the SFF community. His tastes and interests are way more normal than theirs, and as we've seen they despise anyone who strays too far from their template. If anything the only thing saving him from more scrutiny from the people he desperately wants to impress is his total irrelevance.
