I know half a dozen different people who had most or all of their improvement from braces undone because they didn't keep up with wearing a retainer at night when they were teenagers, because surprise surprise, teenagers are irresponsible and don't understand long term consequences.

True, and there's a shift in a lot of places away from braces as a first line of treatment for many problems, in favor of preventive care (like targeting orofacial disorders in young children before the damage is done). And orthodontics as a whole is notorious for overtreating and for valuing appearance over any other issue, particularly in the US. So, not a bad comparison.

Our country is so big that usually we can move within it without problem. Moving to California from Ohio is a giant leap landwise yet there's only some state laws we have to deal with once there. Most countries us Americucks dream of moving to are far away and we only communicate with immigrants into our country as well as see moving across the seas as a pipe dream (as it's expensive), so we get confused and sometimes hurt at how strict our own immigration laws can be and comfortably fantasize about moving to another country without ever thinking about reality.

Makes me wonder if big countries like China are the same.

China has internal passports, you can't just pick up and move and just have to change some paperwork like here, you have to get permission first. The United States (and Canada) are rare for being countries so geographically large and letting people just fuck off into it at will. The United States is also rare for such a high population country that hasn't tried establishing population control on citizens*, even when states and localities tried to block Black people it was more about keeping them out of places (and hoping they went somewhere else) rather than keeping people in certain places permanently which is a more traditional type of caste system.

*I say citizens because this has not been the case with foreigners, and rather specifically the Chinese.

Personally I think that Blanchard's typology is mostly garbage. AGP clearly exists - we have tons and tons of evidence of this - but I don't think that HSTS represents a real differentiation in kind. And I know about "pseudo bisexuality" and all that, but I guess that as an actual woman I just don't see much of a difference between LARPing men based on who they want to fuck. They're all fetishizing "womanhood" in varying ways.
