It doesn't matter how strict a state makes its gun laws, the fact it has free movement with 49 other states means those laws are impossible to meaningfully enforce. Effective gun control could only be implemented at the federal level.

You don't know what "free movement" means, do you?

If you're crossing into the US from Mexico or Canada, your vehicle can be inspected by border guards, you can be denied entry if you don't have a valid visa or for a myriad of other reasons, it's not seamless or instantaneous. If you cross from one state to the next, on the other hand, the only way you would know about it is if you see a road sign while driving past, it's directly equivalent to the EU's Schengen Area. It shouldn't take a genius to figure out why it's easier to smuggle guns between US states than between the US and its neighbours.
