Mega Rad Gun Thread

Alright, It's the fourth and I'm drunk and bored. Unpopular gun opinions, go:

The APX carry A1 is actually not that bad. An optics ready micro compact for $199 (after rebate) is a great deal. The trigger isn't nearly as offensive to me as when I first shot it, after a few hundred/thousand rounds of 92FS double action dry fire practice. The pull is mushy/gritty, sure, but not moreso than other pistols in it's price range, like the G2C or SCCY CPX, and the reset is very tactile and audible. The only thing that truly holds it back is the single stack mags and Beretta TN's shit Q/C. If it could hold 10 rounds or more like it's contempories, I wouldn't hesitate to carry it. As it is, I could only ever see myself using it as a backup carry pocket gun, but that's purely because of the capacity issue, mine works fine. I certainly prefer it over the SCCY CPX, in any case.

I'm not a slavaboo but the Tokarev is a superior design than the 1911 and the only reason why 1911s are higher quality today is because no one ever bothered to innovate with them in the past 90 years besides the Vietnamese and Serbs.
Both pistols were designed to be issued in large numbers and easy for an armorer to disassemble and clean en masse and just toss back together. The tokarev's hammer assembly's ability to come out in one interchangeable piece definitely helps with this in addition to the slightly larger capacity, slimmer profile, and easier disassembly. People love to shit on the safeties while conveniently forgetting that they're just import safeties slapped on to comply with the ATF and the intended half cock safety is perfectly fine.
I'll admit the 1911 has a better trigger and the retainer clip on the tokarev is a bit sketchy though. But if Browning had designed the TT pistol first and it had several decades of extremely popular use in America I'd bet that a hypothetical modern Tokarev derivative would easily be just as good if not better than the modernized 1911s you see.

edit:
Was it PSA with the "proprietary" gas system or am I thinking of someone else?
Are you maybe thinking of PSA's proprietary free float barrel nuts?

The best part of this hypothetical scenario is that we'd be living in a world of Fudds that said that they only shoot 7.62 because nobody makes a 7.61.

Zenith are taking preorders for their domestic MP-5 now.

And not just the pistol. Imagine all the R&D spent on JHP/etc 9mm, and if even a portion had been sunk into better projectiles/propellants for the 7.62x25.

Maybe even comparable cartridges & pistols like the FN 5.7 & FK 7.5 would've been developed much earlier; but the happiest side-effect being a much larger variety of PDWs & PCCs than we see today, since they have the barrel length & other dimensions to take advantage of the cartridge.

But beyond the fact that nobody in the West was going to adopt a filthy pinko round like the 7.62 Tokarev, I think cost had more to do with western designers adopting 9x19 than effectiveness, because 9mm can utilize simple blowback (along with the ammo being easier/cheaper to manufacture).

I have hope more new pistols (& carbines) are designed around the FK 7.5, but that hope rapidly fades when I remember how long it took anyone to do anything with the 5.7, along with the lack of ammo availability (even with Ruger's help now).

My Nightingale Leather custom shoulder rig finally arrived and I absolutely love it. I just wish it wasn't summer so that I can actually wear it out and about. Probably the finest custom leather holster I've ever owned and really well designed. With the strap horizontally crossing the back it eliminates the need for tie-down straps connected to your belt/pants waist, so it doesn't restrict movement and is very comfortable. I also bought four of the Vickers Enhanced Tactical 8rnd magazines since the Chip McCormick 10rnd mags I was carrying for my reloads are a bit too long to be used in the mag carrier and would print. They're really excellent mags and the bodies are a one piece design for strength and to help limit debris and dirt from entering into the mag.

I also spoke with Auto Mag Ltd. a couple weeks ago. They are finally shipping out Auto Mags at a rate of ten to twelve pistols per week. My Auto Mag is something like 177 on the list and they were in the 120s when I talked to them in the middle of June, so I should have my pistol by the end of the month if everything keeps going well. Ian on Forgotten Weapons just recently did two videos on the new Auto Mag 180-D and said he was very impressed with the new guns and praised the updates and improvements made to the design, stating that the pistols are finally what they should have been from the very beginning. He even took the sample gun sent to him for review to a Backup Gun match and had no issues or failures to report. That definitely makes me all the more excited to finally be getting mine. I ordered a 20rnd box of 240gr hollow point .44 AMP cartridges from SBR Ammo so that I'll at least have a little on hand when my pistol arrives. I've found an outfit that does custom hunting loads who are also offering .44 AMP ammunition with a much wider variety of bullet styles and weights compared to what SBR Ammo is offering, and all of them loaded much hotter, with some loads in the 1500ft. lbs. of energy range at the muzzle compared to the around 950ft. lbs. of muzzle energy for the SBR Ammo rounds. They even offer a 300gr jacketed soft point loading, much like Dirty Harry said he used in his Auto Mag in the film Sudden Impact. And the custom stuff isn't all that much more expensive than the SBR Ammo factory loads. I'll have to buy a variety and see which loads my pistol prefers when it arrives.

Nice! Next step: acquire shoulder holster for Auto Mag.

I'm actually hoping to do just that eventually. I've got more important things to buy first, like ammo and plates and pouches for my carrier vest, but I do want a shoulder rig for the Auto Mag. The company that is currently making the holster that Clint Eastwood wore in the Dirty Harry films says on their website that they can make that holster for virtually any medium and large automatic or revolver, and they mention the Auto Mag in particular. It wouldn't be for concealed carry, but instead would be more for wearing out in the woods while camping.

mark IV or buckmark? i want a cheap .22 plinker
I say Ruger Wrangler. It's a fun little revolver that'll only set you back like $200.

I traded in my Mark IV for one, because the Mark IV would frequently jam. Rimmed cartridges like .22LR can have issues in auto-loaders.

As a recent Montana fag, my needs for lever guns to larp as a cowboy have drastically increased. I was looking for a 22 to teach the kid to shoot. I know Henrys are always recommended and I have a few, but is it even worth it to look into other brands?
Don't know if you've found a .22 lever gun yet, but the Marlin 39A is one to consider. They stopped making them back in the mid 2000's but I still see them from time to time. All steel, short throw lever, tube mag, and it's a quick-takedown, though I've never really used or needed that feature. Got mine used and I re-furbished/re-blued it. Well made, very reliable.

Good looking gun too. A stock photo-

I mentioned earlier that I picked up a Sig P210 Target-
https://kiwifarms.net/threads/mega-rad-gun-thread.550/post-12246180

Put 200 or so rounds through it, and it's a shooter. The combination of a front heavy longslide and a longer than usual 6" barrel makes what's supposed to be a bullseye gun really fun on the dueling tree.

My 95gr lead middle of the road reloads are noticeably faster and flatter shooting compared to my other shorter barreled 9mm's. Follow up shots are really fast. Makes perfect sense, but I was still surprised. How often do you get to shoot an all steel 9mm longslide with a 6" barrel? A first for me.

Zero malfunctions, no glaring errors or omissions, and no need to clean up the trigger. So far so good.

Neither.... get a pump .22/gallery gun, takedown if possible. Shoot everything from .22 Short CBs to those hypervelocity varmint zappers. Winchester made them for decades, and Rossi just started again (in wood or polymer). I think I saw the Rossi pumps going for $350 last time I was looking, and they're not that bad (certainly nothing a little tuning couldn't improve).
