When we get up in arms about Ralph raping Alice, it isn't so much the victim we are concerned with (we still are to some extent), it's the fact that Ralph has now demonstrated that he has the capacity and willingness to subject someone to one of the worse forms of victimization short of murder and laugh at the victim afterwards that has us concerned.  That is what bothers us. No, we need to shoot or otherwise permanently incapacitate rapists (preferably by incarceration but not all countries are in a condition they can afford that) or lock up robbers until, theoretically, they learn not to do that or are too weak to do it any more.

I've been ruminating on this for a little bit and I feel that I should try and offer some clarification.

Yes, there are ways to vastly reduce your chances of being victimized that you can easily implement. I'm not arguing against that at all. In fact I may have pointed that out in another post on that topic. The point I was attempting (and seemingly failing) to convey is that regardless of the roadblocks you put up, if someone wants to victimize you, they're gonna do it. If there is a will, there is a way.

Addressing the main point of contention, I was attempting to say that fixing one aspect of a problem does not fix the whole problem. Just as just shooting every Russell Greer and every Ethan Ralph you see isn't going to stop them from propping up. Just as just saying don't rape women isn't going to stop people from raping women. Essentially, if you want to fix a multi-faceted problem, implement a multi-faceted solution. We should encourage people not to commit crimes AND punish them when they do. We can and should do both. That's what disciplining a child should be: teach them right and wrong and punish them when they choose wrong. Just doing one or the other isn't going to truly fix the problem. Which was what I was trying to say. Was I failing at saying it? Maybe.

The reason that I believe that Ralph raped Alice is not so much her testimony. It's the fact that this is so in line with how Ralph behaves and operates that it would be difficult for me to dismiss it entirely. Could I be wrong? Absolutely. But Ralph has a history of misogynistic comments and beliefs, a history of violent crime (assaulting a police officer and initiating multiple physical confrontations), a history of taking the position of "there is no too low", and a history of disproportionate retribution over the smallest of perceived slights so fucking deep that it would not be particularly hard to believe that he did or would. That's why I want to see more evidence: to see if I am wrong about him raping a woman (and by God I hope I am). In fact, I have pointed out that Alice's testimony isn't the most reliable source, even in this MeToo hellhole I am forced to share with you all. All the more reason to pull more evidence out of her.

And to agree with you, I'm certainly not going to say this is something I would say a worm-pig like Ethan Ralph wouldn't do, I just can't say I believe it at this point, I'd almost put a claim like this on equal terms as Ralph's own denial.
