He was (hopefully still is) the East's most significant poltical warrior against Chinese aggression, paper tiger or otherwise. Also, consider that it's been 2 years since his leaving office as the longest serving PM, and Japan's election being literally 2-3 days away, he still holds a lot of clout and sway.

Edit: Having said that, if this wasn't a lone wolf nutter, and there's any ties to North Korea or China, well, Japan's at war. And because of our treaties with them, so is the US.
