Lucas cares about his reputation above all else, like the scotusblog thing if he sees the tides turning against him he'll write up some weak explanation of his behavior, walk back the inflammatory rhetoric, quietly delete all the hostile tweets and unless he really screws up everyone will just let him do it.

It's what's so frustrating about this trend on social media, people with a following like this can just take a scattershot approach towards attacking people. If it starts to go south they just pretend it never happened and everyone lets them, if the intended victim can't defend themselves (usually because they're just some person with no fans at all) they can go all in.
