A summary so far
  • The shooting: Abe was shot at about 11:30 a.m. local time in Nara, east of Osaka, as he gave an election campaign speech on the street. Two shots can be heard in video of the incident, aired by public broadcaster NHK. Abe suffered a gunshot wound to the right side of his neck, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in Tokyo. He was taken to the hospital first by ambulance, then by medical helicopter.
  • The suspect: Police have arrested Tetsuya Yamagami, a Nara resident in his 40s, in relation to the shooting, according to NHK, citing police sources. NHK reported that the man did not try to run away, and is being held for questioning at Nara Nishi police station. He appears to have used a handmade gun, NHK reported. Video footage of the incident shows police officers wrestling the suspect to the ground close to where Abe had been standing, moments after the shots were heard.
  • Abe's condition: The former leader is now in critical condition, undergoing emergency treatment by doctors fighting to save his life, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told a news conference on Friday afternoon. Abe was in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest after collapsing, according to an official from the Nara City Fire Department. He was conscious and responsive while being taken to hospital, according to NHK, citing police.
  • Tokyo's response: At the news conference, an emotional Kishida denounced the apparent attack as "not a forgivable act," saying the government was working to assess the situation and "take appropriate measures."
  • International outcry: Messages from world leaders, past and present, have flooded in, expressing condemnation for the shooting and their well wishes for Abe. The US Secretary of State, Australian Prime Minister, several former Australian Prime Ministers, Indian Prime Minister, British Prime Minister and Taiwanese President are among those who have sent well wishes to Abe.

His weapon looks very, very primitive. Two metal tubes with electrical contacts, triggered by a simple switch, large batteries underneath. Everything is taped together, I'd thought that looked like an Airsoft handle or something as well but now i'm not sure.

Has to have been black powder with that kind of smoke, right?

I remember an anecdote about the Japanese police which said they had to account for every shell casing after firearms practice, which was infrequent, much less civilians. So actual shells might have been hard to come by and it really was a digital blunderbuss.

Stop this world, I want to get off.

How to archive "undownloadable" videos with "blob:" sources like that video:
  1. Open Chrome Dev Tools (Ctrl-Shift-I or F12)
  2. Go to the Network Tab
  3. In the "Filter" textbox in the top left, type "m3u8"
  4. Refresh the page
  5. Play the video you wish to archive.
  6. Click on the "something.m3u8" request that appears
  7. Right click on "Request URL" and click "Copy Value"
  8. In a command prompt with youtube-dl or yt-dlp installed run: yt-dlp -f mp4 -o NAME.mp4 URL_FROM_STEP_7

My guess is the only reason Abe has a chance right now is because of the homemade nature of the gun, it looks like it was more of a double barreled blunderbuss with an electric trigger than a shotgun.

The shooter lives in Nara
He was in the navy from 2002 to 2005
Abe was shot with either a homemade shotgun or pistol taped together
He told police "I thought I'd like to kill him"

The quote is interesting because it emphasizes the word "think", like it was out of the blue.

This article would probably be a useful read. It's a guy who moved to Japan talking about the steps and requirements needed to get a gun for hunting in Japan. One of the certificates you get during the licensing process is required to buy ammunition. So you can't walk into a gun store in Japan and buy just ammo, you're going to have to be at least partway through the process of getting a gun to buy ammo.
