It's especially good because they love SpaceX but can't stand the Musk. Most conservatives have been banned or driven off the site. Also, DrPizza.
Can confirm. I got banned from there 10 years ago for saying lightsqaured's ground based transceivers were going to fuck up gps and not cover any more area than normal 4G would in a couple of years.

It's too bad. Ars was a great site before they embraced a political slant. I remember checking it almost every day.

Every time a new major macOS version came out, they used to do these reviews which went into the changes and improvements in autistic detail; not just the changes to Finder or other apps, but changes in the underlying Unix subsystems and such. They were so great.

SpaceX is probably the single thing that gives the US any kind of tech edge vs China and as much as the Feds love globohomo they still want to make sure they are a peer player on the big boy table. They fuck with Musk, they risk him flipping to China and they know it.
What are you suggesting that Musk do in that scenario? Break the law and leak all the company's trade secrets to China? His actual value as an engineer is low. He has a vision for what he wants and he has worked towards it, but China and other companies like Relativity Space can copy known ideas like partial/full reusability, stainless steel construction, etc. SpaceX under Musk has been a lot more open about its plans and design process than its competitors, and even a single tweet or photo can give valuable info. Basically, Musk could wreck his life and reputation to speed up China's plans by a few years at most.

We have seen foot dragging on SpaceX's Texas plans, which could be blamed on the usual bureaucracy, ire from the Biden Administration, United Launch Alliance's entrenchment, or other factors. SpaceX is the American ride to the ISS right now, but Falcon 9 + Dragon is in a complete state. Starship, Starlink, and Musk himself could be eliminated and the company could just operate in a legacy mode or be sold off. The US should probably try to keep SpaceX happy and Starship clear of red tape if it wants to dominate space in the future, but that's just the rational way forward.

The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating Elon Musk's SpaceX over whether the company discriminates against non-U.S. citizens in its hiring, according to court documents filed on Thursday.
The tragic comedy of the US.

Arse was greatly affected by the Trump era, like many outlets. It's more of a circlejerk than A&N now.

Musk made an absurd offer. $54.20 (nice to have 420 there…again). No one would seriously offer that for Twitter.

He did it because he knew that Twitter would be forced to say “yes” to such an absurdly good offer. More to the point he knew Twitter would have to open their books to him.

Which means he knew he always was going to back out. Which means what is unfolding right now is exactly what he wanted to happen.

What we have to figure out exactly is why.

Remember when he got everyone to pump dogecoin up for his own benefit? Always knowing after the Hedge fund got wasted that everyone would lose? Well, let’s get rid of the nostalgia that he wanted Twitter to promote free speech - he wanted what happened to unfold for a monetary gain of some sort. Nice how Robinhood manages to end up with nearly half of dogecoin and incredible permanent base of transaction fees and control thanks to Elon.

Why would I care about the shopping malls data down the road if I was never going to buy it? Probably because I am planning to build my own or want to know the customer base because I’m looking to buy in to someone else who is starting to build a new shopping mall near by and I want to know if they will be a good business with their model or not. Or because I can use the data and controversy to make that extant shopping mall that really is worth 20 million now be worth only 5 million and get others to buy it for me

Elon fucked Twitter with a purpose and in the end it may be to get it at a much better price that makes financial sense.

There are many possibilities but the least likely is that he was ever insane enough to actually pay $54.20 per share. Whatever game he is playing he is not playing it alone and I suspect Twitter knows what he is really up to and they are damned if they do or don’t let the cat out of the bag.

>a soulless existence without a proper family is living the dream
how's the weather in california?
It is when you are worth 250 billion dollars.

You don't get worth 250 billion dollars by just hanging back with a family and a 9 to 5, sad to say.

yeah because it's a well known fact of the human condition that money can buy happiness
That's true - but Elon seems to be having a pretty great time being King of Capitalism and stirring shit up constantly (see - this Twitter drama for example).

It's not like he could just go back to a normal life, even if he really wanted to.

I keep seeing such a weird argument crop up and, as much as I like laughing at stupid things stupid people say, this one is so jarring that it distracts from my fun watching a weirdo who wants to go to Mars threaten to take away the toys of someone who'd rather burn them than sell them...

Just think of a hypothetical agreement where you agree to trade some object of value to someone in exchange for a box they assure you has $1,000 in it. You both get together and sign a contract, as you do for whatever reason, and then get together to make the exchange. Upon seeing the box you notice a lot of strange colors kinda poking out of it other than the expected green, but you can't get a full look inside. Upon asking if they're handing you Monopoly money, they give you a hell of a time trying to get information at all and stonewall you. You threaten to take your object and walk, claiming a breach of the intended deal, unless they prove to you otherwise. They respond by giving you thousands and thousands of pages of information that, given the amount of time you have to try and parse through it, only seems to assure you it is clearly not Canadian money, and MAYBE 5% of it IS Monopoly money but "Just trust me, bro." This is Twitter and this is what people are defending and demand he agreed to.

All I can say to these people making this argument is that I have a box with $1,000 in it for trade if you're interested.

I am with the people who said this was just a gambit for musk to turn some Tesla stocks into actual cash.
The more I think about it the more I think there has to be more to it than just this. If that was Musk's plan, why not do this approach with some company that was going to cause less controversy and notice than Twitter? Do it with some biotech startup or something boring like that - much easier to slip under the radar of the public and government.

I mean let's back this up and assume this isn't a forgone conclusions. Our options:
  1. This plays out as it is now. Musk has a good reason to liquidate a lot of assets without negatively impacting their value. Whatever the eventual settlement with Twitter ends up as is a pittance in comparison.
  2. DD checks out, there aren't documented bot problems, and a lot of Twitter's doubters get BTFO. He's now owner of a company proven to be undervalued and really 2nd/3rd largest in the space.
This is the kind of win/win an idiot could sort out if they had the war chest to do it. Musk does.

So.

Twitter now wants to force Elon to buy them. Because Elon, being a businessman, can tell it's a bad deal with the current terms and Twitter's reaction to his requesting additional information. But Twitter's stock is tanking now because he made this all public and now everyone knows they're nuimbers are being cooked.

So they want to sue him to force him to buy them before the market destroys them.

A lawsuit.

In a court.

That will have discovery.
