Perhaps there were motives behind whatever the event in question was, and we may never know, whether monetary, social twitter points or whatnot.
I can't recall who led the charge but US courts have already ruled that banning the sharing of 3d printed gun designs is unconstitutional. Everyone I know in the hobby has multiple hard drives with every 3d printed gun file they ever found stored in the event that the internet gets scrubbed of them. The toothpaste is out of the tube and they're never going to get it back in again.

It's much more common in Europe where bullets are heavily regulated, but from what I can tell, it's functional enough to do the job. It's mostly tied to organized crime, but the information exists.
