YouTube Historians/HistoryTube/PopHistory

went into Cyphers Discord Server. "Internet Colonization", "its good to steal from people", Makhno apparently didnt have an army, Mercenaries are apparently Statist, they told me to read Marx when they clearly havent read Marx, and if you like westerns, you are a bigot. Truly an intellectual circle (not what I said btw, they said it)
Sounds like a typical Leftist server to me.

Rudy's doomer saga continues.

He is a hack who doesn't cite sources or does any type of research. In particular the Tiger II vs M8 video had no sources except reddit, and then he included a source which specifically denies it ever happening.
He produces a video 2 or 3 times a week on YouTube, I think the reason he doesn't state his sources is that he's not interested in debating a video once it's gone out and he doesn't really interact with comments. It would be very easy for him to get into a row with those arseholes in r/askhistorians if he showed any hint of being willing to enter into discussions.

He's written nearly 20 books, he's a fellow of the Royal Historical Society so he does have qualifications. Also he covers stuff that's genuinely not widely known about, such as the Granville Raid or those two German POW's who escaped and stole an RAF plane.

He's got access to a shit ton of archival video, and documents,... stuff most history YouTubers could only dream of and his videos are usually watchable.

You're right about the Tiger II v M8 being most likely bullshit. Even if there was a Tiger II there, most likely it died from engine failure and/or crew abandonment like most German Tigers.

It's all a bunch of trash. He became a fellow nearly two months ago anyways, and that, along with writing books, doesn't mean anything. He is lazy and a plagiarist, you have to state your sources or you are just writing horseshit/passing alt history as real. If a fellow of the Royal Historical Society doesn't cite his sources, it means he either paid for it or the position doesn't mean anything, or both.

He just sucks. Don't recommend him.

This is an interesting video and worth a watch. If there are historical inaccuracies people can go after him... but this retarded 'source please' attitude is a carry over from from twitter and youtube debate bros and is fucking gay.

No that's how scientific and historical research works, you cite your sources.

It's even more important nowadays when SEO faggots can get "hitler was a time-traveling transgender pioneer trying to expose the truth about flat earth" to the top of any search engine results.

So are there any historytubers that are supposedly unbiased, nonretarded, and well researched? It seems like almost every single one of them has some sort of flaw with them. Should we just abandon trying to find anything decent on youtube?

TIK is good it's just he goes beyond overboard on sources to the point of autism. I get where he comes from, trying to explain why Hitler is a socialist is like trying to explain to normies that Superman is actually a compelling character, it's shocking and you need to back it up with enough proof. However a 5 hour video on it seems a little too far.

What if Alt historian is actually fairly reasonable-nerdy soy looking he is, his actual politics seems more...center right? His takes are while not always right, seem to be genuinely thought out and even handed.

The rest of them are fairly bog standard-kings and generals supported BLm and ukraine, and so did a lot of the others. Then again no YTer is going to oppose these things and risk demonetization or some other form of censure.

people like Felton because he talks about obscure anecdotes and his style is both casual yet professional. I think his videos are entertaining, but at best they are "snapshot" history that makes you go "that's interesting" and then forget what you heard.

According to his wikipedia page, " and received his education at the Philip Morant School.[4] Felton sat for a BA in history with English at Anglia Polytechnic University, holds a postgraduate certificate in political science, an MA in Native American studies, and a PhD in history, all from the University of Essex.[5]"

I see no reason to question his credentials, even if you dislike his content.

SandRhoman History is pretty good for that, so is Drachinifel, and Tod's Workshop is pretty good for it and his comment section is one of the best on Youtube. With that said though no one is going to be perfect since they're all human at the end of the day.

Sam Aronow does a pretty good history of the Jewish people and is almost "done" his only problem is that, as a secular Jew from the US living in Isreal he has zero grasp of Christian theology and yet insists that all Christians everywhere and everywhen are basically US Evangelicals of the worst sort, and treats genuine questions about Jewish theology from a Christian perspective as Christians telling Jews what to believe. Also he is too whiggish regarding the developement of secular Judaism.
Rating: would be last in the oven/10

He doesn't present them as anecdotes but factual history. If you want to listen to insane ramblings you can go ahead, but its not any kind of history and most certainly shouldn't be recommended as a serious history channel. Also "credentials" don't mean shit, he has no clue what he's doing and clearly doesn't care about reading anymore. Its inexcusable that he cites a source that says the exact opposite of what he claims or simply has no source, he's a plagiarist.

I don't necessarily hate his content as in how he presents stuff, but he's a shit channel and not in any way a professional historian, if you need confirmation look at the link I posted. Either way, Felton wrote or edited his own Wikipedia article.

Jabzy (though it's been awhile since I last saw any of his content), Toldinstone, and Voices of the Past immediately come to mind as ones that fit your description.

Yeah, Mark Felton is such an unprofessional historian that he became a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society back in May. Not to mention he has written several books mostly regarding various aspects of the Second World War. To say he isn't a legitimate historian is porky. Some of his videos may come off as a bit anecdotal but many of his videos are decent. Recently he made a video about Benedict XVI's time during WW2.

You can dislike the style he does his videos in but all in all he's not bad as a historian.

I enjoyed Jabzy's "Travel Around the World Trivia" when that was going on. His new stuff ain't bad either. Also, Voices of the Past is unique in how he presents a more down to earth view of history as it happens to the people that experienced it.

Read everything I've said before, an appeal to authority won't make him a better historian. The Bovington Tank Museum is a "prestigious organization" that gets facts about tanks wrong with a disturbing regularity, so I have very little trust in any British institutions. I don't know why there are so many Felton shills here, but your guy sucks as much ass as any other military youtuber or worse, for passing off non sourced wikipedia articles or reddit posts as fact.

Also, this is the second or third time you shills have replied with "you may dislike his style...". No, I don't care about his style, it's clearly an issue with his capacities as an historian. There's nothing thing more reddit tier than not adressing why he sucks and just going "uhh... ackshually he got accepted to the history boy orgo" as if that justifies his garbage content.

Felton steals shit

I enjoy Felton in the same way that I enjoy Train of Thought, who I've mentioned before. I don't see him as a serious historian, however his content is readily digestible and there's a lot of it. It's brief and to the point and it serves as a nice stepping off point to do your own reading and research into the story presented since he gives you enough to peak your interest without needing to make a multiple hours long video going over things in exhaustive detail. If you like the nutshell he's given you, you can go and learn more if you so desire.

Yes him getting things factually wrong makes him a poor student of history, and yes people taking his word as gospel without doing their own reading makes those people poor students of history as well, but in the end the onus to fact check your sources lies with you.

I don't necessarily disagree with this comment until that last part. Being the YouTube equivalent of History Channel spreads false information and has terrible effects on the public's understanding of history, which later gets reflected in the field itself. This has happened before with one fake Hungarian jet allegedly developed during WW2. Some pop magazine made up its existance, and people have thought its real ever since.

Your average normie wont fact check, apparently neither will a lot of people here, and some sources will be really hard to find for even someone well-acquainted with the field of study. And even if you dont think hes a serious historian, again, even in KF you can find people who think he is nothing more than your average grifter who reads random shit he finds on the internet.

A pop history youtuber who gets shit wrong but at the very least attempts to do research is, despite all the shit I give him, PotentialHistory, at least he cites sources most of the time and admits when he fucks up. And I wouldnt be so harsh against Felton if he actually tried to correct things when hes wrong or credit the people he steals from, who would most likely not have a single issue with it otherwise.
