Lots of people want to lessen the dependency on fossil fuels as a fuel source, but a lot of complete retards that claim to be environmentalists have spent 50 years protesting against nuclear as a the primary supplier to the energy grid, and for a huge list of both essential and QoL items, petrochemicals go into the production process.

You want high-efficiency appliances, computers, smart devices, cars, air travel, bicycles, house that retain heat and stay cool depending on the season, the ability to preserve foods in your own home without chemicals? It's not anything like an exhaustive list, but petrochemicals go into a ton of shit, and not every country can be as hilariously retarded as Brazil, where they have the perfect ingredients to create a cash crop with leftovers that can produce biodiesel, and still fail to be anything but a 3rd world shithole, outside the tourist traps.

I came the the same conclusion as with other pieces I've read, in that the problem would actually appear to be there are too many people to feed on Earth and we either get rid of some or cut the reproductive rate down.

I don't get what you mean. Brazil uses a huge amount of ethanol produced from sugarcane waste which gives them some level of self-sufficiency from global oil prices (which is why it started). The problem with Brazil is it's still Brazil.

Except we already have a ton of alternatives, and we can theoretically expect the free market to assist those alternatives. Ethanol is our best bet since it can be produced from anything, can be made in your garage (just get the ATF fuel permit of 10K gallons a year), and engines can already run on it. Methanol could work too although that needs to be industrially made with new engines. Fischer-Tropsch process and Bergius process have been known for over a century and were extensively used in oil-poor WWII Germany. Hydrogen vehicles exist, including hydrogen-powered planes (pioneered by the Soviet Union in the 70s).
