And yes the age of consent was no higher than 12 in America until the late 19th century. The Napoleonic Code - which became the law in numerous countries - also had a similar age of consent. There was a big movement to change this in many western countries the late 19th century, which coincided with the stigmatization of pedophilia. I already gave you my take on the origin of pornography. It largely replaced prostitution, which is still a thing but which a much greater percentage of Western men used to partake in, as an easy outlet for male sexual gratification.

The papal states for example established the age of consent (not for betrothal, for sex) at 12.

Psychologists played an important role in pathologizing pedophilia in the late 19th century.
