(I don't live in Appalachia, but I can make a meta-commentary on the South)
The South in general is kinda shite if you aren't a boomercon conservative who does the gayass good ol' boys club thing and are the extremely pious type that is either a degenerate or hypocrite behind the scenes. There are peopele ITT that think the South is the bastion of the white race (lmao) or super based due to its politics or due to proliferation of rural communities (this is actually relatively understandable), but they are wrong. The South is pretty fucking dull if you aren't a normalfaggot. While it does have a very nice culture based upon kindness and respect and the natural preserves are beyond breathtaking, if you stick out in any relatively minor way, you are never going to make it in the culture and you won't really be a part of it in any meaningful sense.
The culture here is designed to enforce this unspoken rule of homogeneity to a retarded degree. Do you like STEM topics and not sports? Geez, bro, that's a bit anti-social don't you think? Do you like anime (without any sort of fanservice or pandering to degeneracy. I'm talking like DBZ type shit), Japanese culture, video games, metal/hard rock that's a bit outside the norm but not complete noise? That's for children. Real men go fishing and drink with their buddies on the weekend all the time before going to the local college game and listen to shitty country music. It might be because I live in a place that's an intersection between the rural, suburban and urban parts of the South, but this has annoyed the ever-loving shit out of me and has made me want to leave this place like no other.
I admit, the women are pretty hot here, the surrounding nature trails are breath-taking and the city itself isn't terrible, but the weather is absolute ass during the summer and the lead up to it (but that's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things), the combination of the whole good ol' boy shit with frat culture is fucking grating and the personalities of the people here are either dull or infuriating for the most part, plus I have absolutely no chance with any of the women here since they are either shitlib thots or the 1950's housewife type of women who get scandalized by swear words on the caliber of "fuck". In a sense, that's my problem with the South: it's TOO old-fashioned and yet the ways it's progressing are for the worse. I understand that tradition is tradition for a reason, but we don't need to be so bound to tradition that we can't improvise a little as the times change. Likewise, getting rid of tradition is absolute lunacy. But for some reason, it feels like the American South is trapped between these two worlds in the worst spot possible. It's really a hellscape of sorts. The one thing keeping me sane nowadays is just not talking or responding to most people and just bothering with my family, friends and workmates. You have to make the most out of what you have.
Mind this isn't a defense of the absolute lunacy of the progressive spaces of the country or the world at large. It's just my personal gripes with living in the South my entire life, in a place I could never fit in without lying to myself. Some, maybe most people, can do it here. I can't do it unless it has to do with some shit more important than basic bitch socialization like a job, or a formal event or the like.
