RWBY - The Hindenburg on which Rooster Teeth rests its hopes, dreams and future

You know, what I think the problem is with a lot of characters and their powers these days?

Their writers, because the writers are so focused on making their characters, the strongest, prettiest and coolest guy/gal around that limits or rules don’t apply to them.
Being OP isn't a problem, it's like saying everyone & everything has to be "relatable" (which kinda led to the decade old rot of Western media). Being written to be annoying is the problem, which led to most RWBY characters feeling annoying even since the 1st 3 Vols, but moreso since V5.

It kinda is when you have every power, or the strongest power, it’s boring because no one can challenge you. What’s point of an action show where the action feels cheap?

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've commented 'n shit.

I'm watching the "RWBY: Ice Queendom" show and... what the hell is this cast?? I wouldn't be surprised if RT spent 5 years' worth of their fucking revenue to afford it.

Ruby Rose: Saori Hayami (Shinobu from "Demon Slayer", Yor from "SPY x FAMILY", Shoko from "A Silence Voice")

Yang Xiao Long: Ami Koshimizu (Ryuko from "Kill la Kill", Kallen from "Code Geass", Holo from "Spice & Wolf")

Weiss Schnee: Youko Hikasa (Mio from "K-On!", Diana from "Little Witch Academia", Rias from "High School DxD")

Blake Belladonna: Yuu Shimamura (Annie from "Attack on Titan", Zelda from "TLoZ: BotW", Akiko from "Bungou Stray Dogs")

Professor Ozpin: Kazuhiko Inoue (Kakashi from "Naruto", Gildarts from "Fairy Tail", Hatori from "Fruits Basket")

Pyrrha Nikos: Megumi Toyoguchi (Winry from "Full Metal Alchemist", Revy from "Black Lagoon", Dawn from Pokémon)

Jaune Arc: Hiro Shimono (Zenitsu from "Demon Slayer", Connie from "Attack on Titan", Keima from "The World God Only Knows")

Nora Valkyrie: Aya Suzaki (Mako from "Kill la Kill", Tamako from "Tamako Market", Kaede from "Assassination Classroom")

Lie Ren: Souma Saitou (Tatsumi from "Akame ga Kill!", Tadashi from "Haikyuu!!", Twelve from "Terror in Resonance")

Not really, some are still likeable despite being OP. Again, the main problem isn't the characters being OP, it's that they have less to none amount of charm & charisma to be likeable. Hell, even some of the good characters (which got fucked by RT's writing) lack the amount of impact to keep them in head.

That's actually been their Japanese dub cast since they started doing the Japanese dub of RWBY years ago.
And yes, it's nuts.

While I agree on the charisma part.

Being OP only works in shows like One Punch Man.

Not really, Satoru Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen is considered to be one of the best characters in the series, despite pretty much being the strongest in the whole series, specially for the charisma part. There's also Goku & Vegeta from Dragon Ball (except Super, DBS is shit) are beloved since decades. Even some Isekai protags are OP & well loved.

And not just anime, there's also 80's Action Heroes, you don't see the 1st Rambo & think "it's bad cause OP hero", you watch it to see what war PTSD does to a man. You don't watch Predator to say "look how bad it is cause Arnie is OP" you watch it for a 80's Action kino showing how a front soldier has to survive with stealth & guerilla warfare tactics against an alien entity, You don't watch Under Siege for Steven Seagal's OP Bullshido (it's still a great film), you watch it for Erika Eleniak's perfect tits. I can go on-&-on, but basically this applies to most 80's, 90's, & even some action flicks to this day. Even Cruisekinos, & Tom Cruise actually does his own life-threatening, reality-defying stunts, thus all Cruise films being Cruisekinos.

Hell, surprisingly, even some Pajeetkinos recently are fun to watch, & they shamelessly make their characters OP, but they're great to watch. Hell, one of them even has it's own thread for being the best this year. The same director's last work is mentioned on Star Wars thread at times on how to do a OP character right, unlike the SW Sequels. Also, said Pajeetkinos also found a way to do the whole "OP characters with no challenge" issue.

TL;DR: Having an OP character isn't a bad, writing said character to be likeable alone solves more than half the issue of a character, like OPM did. Even being OP becomes part of the character & it's charm, if he's written well enough.

Wow, that's fucking insane.

Also, KF won't let me share gifs and images at the moment, so here's an Imgur album thing of the animation errors and shit that I saw while watching Episodes 1-3. (may update this later)

What a shame the anime looks absolutely gorgeous at times...

I’ve also heard that’s one of the issues with Aura. Only when it’s broken is the time when you’re supposed to care.
Aura was a really dumb inclusion born out of Monty's knuckleheadedness. He wanted the characters to be able to slice each other up without causing grievous harm to each other, so he came up with a vague Halo shield with lore that makes no sense. Now it's always in the way, because characters can't be hurt until their Aura gets broken, and the writers have no idea how to handle it, so the mechanics of how Aura functions gets more and more inconsistent with each volume.

First it's like a passive shield that someone has to unlock for you. Even mooks seem to have it which is why Ruby isn't carving up White Fang left and right. At first there's no obvious way to tell when an Aura is 'broken' so you really have no reason to care about what's happening on screen at all. Then they course correct around V4/5 by making it something you have to 'activate' and maintain, so that they can justify having someone like Sienna get murdered in a single stab. Now Aura flashes and shatters when it gets broken, but the show doesn't keep that consistent so it gets muddied, and now you know not to pay attention to the fight or who is winning until the Aura snap happens.

Then they pretty much just give up on it completely in 7/8 when shit like Ruby falling four feet happens and it breaks instantly.

Shit is just completely fucked and they should have axed it completely.

I heard that Ice Queendom wasn’t terrible. what are your thoughts?

Miles is too much of a pussy to interrupt his girlfriend making out with another chick to try for a threesome, there's no way he could handle any firearm without crying.
He is, however, enough of a weirdo to let his girlfriend do that and gather his guy friends so they can watch him get cucked in real time.

The writing is mostly good, and the animation is the inverse of the canon show. Very pretty, but not a lot of fights.

This is a critics' and writers' dream, as opposed to being a spectacle fest that caught our eye ten years ago.

damn. i used to be really into this series even though i found it kind of cringe, but fell off because, shit i don't know i guess i didn't want to pay to watch new episodes and forgot about it. last season i saw was some of volume 4.

i had good memories of binging the series with my buddies, but i hear the series went to shit. and with the rise and fall of rooster teeth video that came out, i admit i'm pretty curious how much of 'to shit' it went. yet at the same time, maybe the happy nostalgia i have with it is preventing me from actually checking to see why.
my favorite characters were pyrha, qrow, mercury and winter, if that's any indication of what enjoyment i got out of the series.

anyway, i'm here to ask, was it ever publicly revealed what deviations the series did from monty's vision? i always heard about that in the past, and i heard a bit about it in the joon video, but i'm really curious what monty had in mind that they didn't go with.

Only what Shane has brought up. Also, “Monty’s Vision” has become kind of a meme around here.
