It's probably a clinic that works with a rescue. When I worked at a vet clinic, we had two cat rescues that routinely paid for animal hoarders to have bunches of cats fixed at a time. The owners were almost always like Polissa... obese, unwashed, and crazy.

Usually it's lifelong Democrats, thoroughly disgusted by what the party, and the left in general, has become (or is no longer pretending not to be). There's no place left for them in the party, but they're still old-school pro-choice, pro-LGB, free-speech, pro-labor, anti-war liberals who, while they might consider voting for a Republican, aren't far enough right to join their ranks.

Given that all of the other political parties in this country are basically worthless, if not worse than either of the big two, they're no longer affiliated with any party. They're independents, but not by choice.

I don't run across very many former Republicans like Polissa who describe themselves as politically homeless, but it's not unheard of.
