It was mentioned in the "How to detect a retard" thread posted by @AnOminous that a lot of the criminals we think of as simply malicious are actually just too stupid to wrap their heads around empathy, that is, the mere concept that other people have feelings. I wonder to what degree that applies to these people, considering that on one hand they fit the bill of the oblivious dullard, while on the other they're specifically getting off to the idea of inflicting pain and agony on an animal, which would hinge on possessing enough theory of mind to understand the power dynamic they gain gratification from. Had they no theory of mind at all, animals would be merely reduced to the status of objects and there'd be no point to relishing in their pain any more than in sticking pins through a doll.

Regardless, they're clearly too stupid to understand that their contempt for animals is what lowers them to the very subject of that contempt. A person of average intelligence doesn't feel smug about being smarter than a monkey. Racist people who obsess about eugenics wouldn't ever consider bragging about their superiority to bonobos, because why would they? Everyone knows that even the downest of downies is smarter than a chimpanzee. These people, however, feel insecure about it. They need to actively prove to others and themselves especially that they're better than a macaque, and that's absolutely pathetic.

Almost all the hardcore every day fanbase uses infantilizing language in their comments, and quite a number have a particular obsession with "disciplining" the monkeys until they're completely broken both physically and mentally. They deny it with a passion to the point of writing small essays, but you can't convince me the monkeys aren't a substitute for babies. Random thought and a little bit of PL'ing but reading this thread dredged up this memory from a couple years ago.

I used to work with this girl at my job. She was a vegetarian and found meat to be gross and inhumane and she was all about PETA and shit like that but I found out from talking to her that she HATED monkeys, and hated baby monkeys in particular. I think it came up when I texted her a picture of a monkey with makeup on and asked her if it reminded her of anyone. She explained that she really disliked monkeys and when I asked her why, her explanation was something like "They look weird and they creep me out" or something like that. "Fuck monkeys, they can all die" was kind of her attitude towards them as far as I can recall. I remember finding it very weird that someone who was into animal rights activism had so much hatred for this oddly specific type of animal. It never really came up again and I didn't send her any more monkey pictures because I realized she REALLY didn't like monkeys. Normally I would have pounced on the opportunity to bust her labia and tease her with something I knew would get to her but my sense was this would go beyond the playful back and forth flirting we usually engaged in, such was her apparent dislike of monkeys, At the time I just assumed monkeys weren't her thing. I have known women who disliked some specific animals in particular - this girl from high school who was terrified of whales comes to mind - but I didn't assume she would actually harbor any violent or sadistic feelings towards monk-monks, what with her being a vegetarian and a PETA person, but reading this thread REALLY has me thinking.

I can see how being terrified of large sea creatures would come about. In the depths no one can hear you scream. Jonah got swallowed by a whale. There's Moby dick. A lot of people are afraid of drowning or the water in general. There's lots of freaky creaures in the sea that look like nightmare fuel. Although most are way too deep for humans to encounter.

But monkeys? Other than King Kong (who was mistreated in the film) I don't see any reason why the average person would flat out hate non-human primates for no reason. Especially if you live in an area that is free of monkeys. I've only seen them in zoos myself.

I'm telling you, tons of people hate monkeys, even though virtually all of them would have a visceral reaction to the idea of monkey torture videos.

Monkeys are dirty, and twitchy, and bitey, and just smart enough to get into trouble without being smart enough to not act like uninhibited animals. Sloths are way slower, and like I said previously people don't hate animals like orangutans because they're laid back where as monkeys won't ever stop and they constantly seem like they're up to something. They're always grabbing at stuff and getting into things and they shriek...just generally there's a lot of reasons to dislike monkeys.

In fact the people who tend to consume this kind of filth in a lot of ways are unlikeable for the same reasons monkeys are; maybe that's why they do it, because they're also dirty twitchy shifty subhumans with no self control and what they most hate about monkeys is what they hate about themselves, maybe it really is anti-competitive instincts because it sure seems like monkeys can give most of them a run for their money in terms of intelligence, but I won't accept this mad claim that monkeys aren't garbage.

The issue is when a person seems "normal", especially online, that's as likely to be a sign they're repressed as it is that they're actually sane and well adjusted, and that means if they find an outlet where they can indulge their darker impulses with a community that will approve of it, that's all it takes for them to start sliding down.

If you're going to trust anyone trust grumpy weirdos, because everyone has aggressive/antisocial impulses, it's just a question of whether they wait until people's backs are turned to let them out.
