My prediction is that if Archie's heart stops beating before the decision is made to remove him from active treatment, the family will become intolerable because they will see this as a "win", despite the kid being (officially) dead.

This whole thing is about them digging in their heels and wanting to one up "the establishment", because their socioeconomic status has given them challenges which they see as entirely due to other's actions. Very external locus of control stuff.

That's the part of the whole story that bothers me so much, Archie's entire life was one humiliation after another. Whether it was his mother's "career" or her munchie behaviour (like running off to the papers because she burned his eyes applying the wrong medicine), even when he's dead the poor fucker can't seem to catch a break.
