Sony hate thread

I still laugh that they spoiled FF16 is coming to PC eventually right out of the gate and then tried to pretend it didn't happen.
They're going all in on paying FF7 homage.

It's not the first time it happened it's just people don't remember.

What? What?
Smaug I think there may be regional differences with how certain games are viewed, because this was very true in America what Albert is describing.

Spyro was viewed as another company who is not Nintendo making a Nintendo styled game on Playstation. It was a pretty big deal.

Don’t miss the part “name brand recognition”. Obviously, PS1 did not just sell because of FFVII alone. It’s just that as years and decades passed, that game in particular is the one that most think of as the success story as to why the PS1 is still heralded as one of the best gaming consoles that Sony ever created, until the PS2 came along.

I questioned why SquareEnix never did this with Chrono Cross or the Mana series, but that’s just my own opinion on a entirely different game series.

is that why that game is being shilled to hell and back? I always found it odd how people treat that series like the second coming of christ.
Yes. It's EarthBound/FF7 syndrome - game that was originally for a niche audience gets in the hands of the normies and it becomes extremely popular. Why do you think both Cloud and Joker are in Smash?

Zoomers found out that JRPGs can be fun, and Persona's like the only one that has modern anime aesthetics and storytelling. There are very few new turn-based JRPGs that don't suck shit, and the ones that don't tend to be made with older tastes in mind. Persona 5's like what FF6 was at a time when the term "RPGs" brought to mind the likes of Ultima.

There are probably some funny chimpouts on some newsgroups somewhere from the mid 90s over people calling the likes of Final Fantasy an RPG because it quit being anything like D&D after 3j

Honestly, it’s days like these where I wish the Silent Hill series received the Earthbound/Persona/FF7 syndrome and make it extremely popular. Granted it’s still an incredible game that no even close to being underrated, but I sometimes felt that it was (slightly) overshadowed by Resident Evil fame.

You ARE BEING GIVEN A CHARACTER HOW IS THAT AN RPG

Depending on how strict you want to be with the term "role playing", you can pretty much call no video game an "RPG" because pretty much every game is predetermined on some level to a very rigid degree. Literally nothing that can be programmed can match the raw "Role Playing Game" prowess of DnD or any other TTRPG. I don't care if you can faff about in Skyrim, or Fallout, or whatever. Their is still so few things you can do because the game can only handle so many variations of the overarching objective. An actual Dungeon/Game Master in a Tabletop RPG can literally do anything as long as they can think on their feet and follow the rules, and rules only exist to keep the game consistent so you don't have some retard going "I dodged the attack because I said so, I don't actually die."

JRPGs have given you characters since what, FF4 at least? You are playing a role, just you are playing the role of Cecil, or Terra, or Cloud, or Joker, or whoever really. Technically Ultima made you play as "The Avatar" since its start more or less, who is meant to be something of a character.

I will not buy a PS5 and do not plan to. I probably won't buy any Sony product since none of them are all that appealing, even their single din stereos.
I'm moderately interested for the SSD and backwards compatibility. My og PS4 is 8 years old. It still works fine....but you never know. I've generally been pretty lucky with Sony consoles and not really had to replace them. My PS1 I bought and chipped in 99 still has the original laser and works fine.

There are some EU only horror titles I'm interested in, but I'm not in a huge rush. I'll get one eventually, but probably wait for the upgrade this time.

Yeah except the Japanese console industry bends to how things perform globally. The Saturn was killed after PlayStation took off globally due to Final Fantasy 7, it was neck and neck with the Saturn until FF7 came out. Hell the Dreamcast was killed after it's poor global performance post launch. It did fine in japan but the rest of the world not doing well sealed it's fate after 2 years.

The PS5 has a much larger digital influence than previous playstation consoles including having an all digital system. You're just going by physical sales of a singular region but's it's shown that Sony is more reliant on digital sales worldwide. So all the numbers you're posting are missing a lot of parts to make a 1:1 comparison.
Shut your mouth, NZ Nigger. No one wants to hear from you.

To those that play Killzone: Shadow Fall, you have three weeks to obtain its multiplayer trophies. Guerrilla Games is shutting down servers for three of their titles.

Thanks, now Killzone cannot be played online (officially) anymore. Guess they're killing that franchise now.
Damn that sucks. I actually like Shadow Falls online. Ill reinstall the game and play the MP (killzone has a dedicated fanbase). 4 years ago I did the same thing with Killzone 3s online before the servers were shut down. Now theres no Killzone online games left. Instead they will focus on the Horizon franchise. I played Horizon Zero Dawn and it was decent but Id rather have Killzone. Will we ever see Killzone 5?

Wait...

We're honestly comparing FF7 popularity to Earthbound Syndrome?
Yes, because literally the same thing happened to both: normies discovered them and fell in love with them (FF7 because ZOMG SO CINEMATIC and EarthBound because ZOMG SO QUIRKY/people playing Smash going "who the hell is Ness?"), which caused them to become immensely popular, which caused a wave of imitators to follow in both of their wakes (after FF7, almost every JRPG had to be "cinematic" and "deep" and "gritty", and don't even get me started on the fucking plague EarthBound has wrought).

That's exactly what I mean. Even for the PS2 things like Final Fantasy 10 didn't come until much later. Usually by year 3 or 4 the system kicks into gear. Most of the games the PS2 was known for didn't come until later in the systems' life.
The PS2 came out in 2000 and in 2001 we had Final Fantasy X, Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (which might not sound like a big deal now but it was one of the biggest franchises at the time), Resident Evil Code Veronica X, Klonoa 2, Jak and Daxter, Grand Theft Auto III, Devil May Cry, Gran Turismo 3, SSX Tricky (again, extreme sports games were big at the time), Ico, Twisted Metal Black, Onimusha, Half-Life, Max Payne, and even interesting niche Japanese series like Harvest Moon. We also had both EA Sports and Sega Sports games competing on the same platform that year (a big deal for normies) and Dreamcast ports of games like Crazy Taxi. The PS2 had an amazing year after launch and it continued to get even better from there during the following years.
