It’s been hard watching my Dad grow older. I remember when he was in his 40s and at the prime of his life, fit, smart, and profession. He’s in his 70s now and has Alzheimer’s. He can barely remember most things now but he still remembers me. I’m somewhere around 10ths from 40 now and the thought is haunting. Our lives are so short and everything happens so fast. I really wish I had longer to cherish all of this beautiful world but the reality is in 30 more years I’ll be like him most likely. It’s realizing how terrifyingly short 30 years is that makes me feel old. It’s nothing. The blink of an eye. 10 years here and another 10 and before you know it it’s over before you ever got to really get anywhere.

Seeing your loved ones go and then realizing you'll be where they were soon brings it all home. Just another reminder to make damned good use of the time you have.

I have been dipping in and out of the F1 thread from time to time. Drivers like Hamilton, Vettel and Alonso are considered the "old guard." I can still remember these guys being the fresh new up-and-comers. They're all older than me so it's not that bad (yet), but still...

I'm not into racing, but I can relate a lot when it comes to athletes/sports. It seems like only yesterday that hockey players like Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin were making their NHL debuts as fresh faced 18 and 20 year olds respectively, primed to become two of the next legends (which has come true) of the sport. Crosby is going to turn 35 in two weeks and Ovechkin will be 37 in less than two months.

I look at some of my favourite players from when I was growing up and it blows my mind to think that not only have most of them been retired for over a decade, but also that they'll be considered senior citizens shortly.

Another thing is that so many sons of former athletes that I remember watching are now either being drafted or are already playing at the highest level of their sport. For instance, just earlier this week was the MLB (baseball) draft and the top two picks were the sons of guys that I grew up watching a lot. The father (who is 42) of the first draftee will have been retired for 4 years early this October, the father (who is 45) of the latter will have been retired for a decade around the same time this October.

A couple things:

I had a Zoomer Airman, complete with the perm, try to relate to me a couple days ago and he used "FR no cap" in casual conversation. I asked him what that meant in English.

I picked up golf and find it a very rewarding sport. The idea of spending a couple hours on the course, at the driving range, or the chipping/putting green is more exciting to me than Elden Ring.

I've noticed my hair growth is slowing down and I'm starting to see gray hairs too. However, believe it or not, I'm okay with that. I like getting older. I know too many boomers who are insecure about their age. I don't want to be like them. Their attitude about aging is pathetic and cringey.

Also, I agree with this saying, "Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards." As you get older, you have the opportunity to reflect on your life. For better or for worse, I believe everyone should take the time for serious introspection.
