WHO declares highest alert over monkeypox

The monkeypox outbreak has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization.

The classification is the highest alert that the WHO can issue and follows a worldwide upsurge in cases.

It came at the end of the second meeting of the WHO's emergency committee on the virus.

More than 16,000 cases have now been reported from 75 countries, said WHO director general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

There had been five deaths so far as a result of the outbreak, he added.

There are only two other such health emergencies at present - the coronavirus pandemic and the continuing effort to eradicate polio.

Dr Tedros said the emergency committee had been unable to reach a consensus on whether the monkeypox outbreak should be classified as a global health emergency.

However, he said the outbreak had spread around the world rapidly and he had decided that it was indeed of international concern.

"The WHO's assessment is that the risk of monkeypox is moderate globally and in all regions, except in the European region, where we assess the risk as high," he added.

What really made it a problem was our infallible and benevolent medical system giving people AIDS via blood transfusions. There's a reason gay men are still ineligible to give blood in many regions. They're walking petri dishes of incurable disease, and this was true in the 80s and 90s. But people like Fauci (literally, Fauci was one of them) ignored the truth because it was un-PC and now the entire world has AIDS. All they had to do was block gay blood donors the instant the statistics showed that it was almost exclusively gay men who had this disease and there never would have been a pandemic.

I can pretty much guarantee the exact same thing is going to happen now. I'm not totally sure it's a coincidence that we're getting a new gay plague immediately after a big worldwide push to let gay men donate blood.

And while anyone can catch monkeypox, the outbreak is overwhelmingly concentrated in gay and bisexual men, as well as other men who have sex with men.
This can make the outbreak easier to tackle, as efforts, including vaccines and public health information, can be targeted at those most at risk.
But remember, there are still countries where same-sex relationships are illegal - and stigma and persecution can act as a barrier to help.
Whether we can stop monkeypox can be stopped is as much a societal and cultural challenge as it is about the virus.

If monkeypox is so serious with the potential of a pandemic, why not start handing out smallpox vaccines right fucking now? Its roughly 85% effective at preventing infection from monkeypox.

The reason is that it has a gross chance of 1 in 1182 of causing a serious adverse cardiac event of pericarditis or myocarditis.

It's still better than ACAM2000, which is approved for smallpox and not monkeypox, which has a rate of a serious adverse cardiac event of pericarditis or myocarditis of 1 in 176.

Both are still better than the old smallpox vaccine, Dryvax, which has been discontinued. That has a rate of serious adverse cardiac event of pericarditis or myocarditis of 1 in 96.

For all the people that say "the fags need to wear a condom". In this situation, a condom won't stop transmission in all instances. The monkeypox lesions would typically be outside of the area covered by a condom, so touching any of the lesions will likely cause transmission. Also, it can be transmitted very short distance by respiratory droplet, a couple feet, more if it's a sneeze. So, if you are having sex with someone face-to-face, then you can also transmit it. Overall, condoms would slow down the transmission rate, but not prevent it entirely.
