We need to stop calling monkeypox a gay disease … you can catch it from skin contact, clothing, or even animals. It's very possible for children to get it from infected adults or other children this way.

I can't speak about the situation in the US, but in the UK (where cases were initially reported), the outbreak has been marked by LBGTQ+ organisations' utter failure to communicate that gay men are particularly at risk. LGBTQ+ organisations and activists denounced any attempt to warn gay men that they were at risk as "vile homophobia".

Anyone who engages in high risk sex acts and drug use knowingly assumes the risk of contracting an infectious disease, so I don't feel sorry for them when it happens.
