Plagued Waifu culture - Cartoon fuckpillows and the men (and women) who love them

"Waifu"? I saw this kinda faggotry on the net, is that some kinda form of imaginary friend of junkies of Japanese popular culture (comics, animated stuff, games, music, pop culture idols and so on)?
Step 1. Play a video game/watch an anime/read a mango
Step 2. Become attracted to them because they have big t- loving personality.
Step 3. Declare them as your waifu/husbando
Step 4. Forget that the whole concept of "waifus" was intended as a joke and never meant to be taken seriously since it's literally a kind of behavior more or less exclusive to young children and people suffering from schizophrenia
Step 5. Ignore reality as much as possible and proceed to descend into madness while everyone else laughs at you

Did I miss anything?

What if the fictional universe your waifu comes from frowns on monogamy? Say, someone would produce an anime based on "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley, and someone would chose the character Lenina Crowne as their waifu -- but the World State is very adamant about encouraging polyamoury which is the recommended way of life for all citizens (even though Lenina has a tendency to bend these rules). Would it still be a requirement to have just one waifu in your laifu? (In fact, the term doesn't even make sense in the setting because marriage and traditional family have long been abandoned in BNW, reproduction is done technologically via ectogenesis.)

Ask on the subreddit - I wonder what kind of answer they're going to give you, genuinely.

I don't find this video to be very believable because the man in it both leaves his home and apparently has a real job.
It's Japan.

BTW compared to the Pony Waifu trend (think Taxman and Jin), this Anime Girl worship stuff seems inoffensive, harmless and silly. The Anime waifu people make a big point about valuing admiration and romance over hankypanky. This is a big difference to the nonstop knocking fest in the Brony Barn. While it is still rather bizarre to feel this degree of romantic attraction to a cartoon character, they seem to be aware of it being bizarre. Anime Waifuism is IMO one of the more charming, harmless sets of lolcows.

I think it appears chaste because this particular community values chasteness - at least the mods, PM_ME_WHATEVER and that one who I mentioned leaving in the OP do, and mods play a huge role in guiding a community. Waifu shit, based on time spent in various chans where the topic came up, can get just as insane.

I dunno, anime spergs have had like at least a 30-year head start on bronies. It's only a matter of time until we eventually stumble upon a waifu-fag with a power level as incomprehensibly immense as someone like Jin or Taxman.

Even if we don't, anyone who insists they're in a serious committed relationship with a pillow is automatically worth laughing at at least once or twice. Even if the only thing they'll ever hurt in their entire lives is their dignity and their parent's ability to have pride in their failure of a son.

Such anime waifu spergs could no doubt be out there. The only difference between that sort from Jin and Taxman is that said waifu sperg could no doubt be more aware. Speaking of committed relationships with a pillow, there was mention somewhere on the net that a man married a body pillow.

One of a Lyrical Nanoha character, I believe.

The really sad part (well, a really sad part) is that some of them appear to be girls, if they could just pair off, have normal sex, maybe that'd knock a few of them out of their waifu/husbando thing. If not, then, I dunno, legal marriage for tax purposes? With a room full of love pillows for the happy couple to share.
