I can't believe this doesn't have a thread! What kind of autistic place is this?

I watched the first three of the reboot thing and I'm not impressed. The only one that was kinda good was the lizard man one. The first two episodes I didn't know what the hell was going on. One was about Glenn Beck and Alex Jones love child that they could have done more with.

I still haven't watched any of the reboot, but I'm definitely excited to get to it.

You have a favorite episode/season/story arc? Mine are probably The Field Where I Died, S3, and either Mulder and Krycek visit Russia + immediately wind up in rebooted top secret gulag (that whole back-and-forth between them with each getting the upper hand on the other, over and over, has the vibe of a petty and vindictive slapfight), or Smoking Man being Mulder's dad which was both weirdly hilarious and genuinely interesting character-development wise.

Still kinda bummed they made Mulder a 9/11 truther
Our spergy friends at TVTropes discussed this.
In the reboot, why did Mulder roll his eyes at 9-11 Trutherism, especially when his pals The Lone Gunmen stopped an attempt at something creepily similar six months earlier than the actual event? Did the trio not mention it to him?
  • He was actually rolling his eyes at the "government stealing our guns" part, as evidenced by him quoting it back to O'Malley verbatim in the limo later. Mulder is a distinctly '70s conspiracy theorist. He's a relic from a time when the left-leaning public were terrified and angry about Watergate, COINTELPRO, the Church Committee, the Imperial Presidency, etc., and believed the US government could and would do anything with impunity, but one honest man with a top secret dossier could blow the lid off the whole thing. Here, O'Malley is initially presented as a right-wing Tea Party-esque foil for Mulder; while they share a belief in government misdeeds, Mulder criticizes O'Malley for getting rich off of public paranoia and liberal-bashing without presenting any proof. It's clear Mulder seems himself as more Edward Snowden than Alex Jones.
It sounds like the trutherism was trying to make sense of a plot point from an older episode. What do you think? I was confused with all the exposition getting all over the place.

I really don't know what to think. The implication that the previous seasons were a load of bullshit is probably not a good sign. The way they explained that the conspiracy is not about an alien invasion set on 2012 but one about a nonsensical war of misinformation makes me think the show is missing a giant robot that shoots nuclear missiles. I still look forward to see what craziness they'll come up with next and hoping that a second season will have an increased episode count.
I enjoyed the monster-of-the-week on the other hand.

Minimalist X-Files Drinking game:
  1. Divide into two teams, Team Mulder and Team Scully.
  2. Whenever someone says "Mulder" (including Mulder), Team Mulder drinks.
  3. Whenever someone says "Scully" (including Scully), Team Scully drinks.
  4. Whenever someone says "Come take a look at this" or some variation of same, everyone drinks.
  5. Any more rules would be irresponsible.

I enjoyed the show up until the fourth season, but then it kind of went off the rails for me and I stopped watching. I think a crippling flaw of the show is that one of the central themes is the way the conflict between the skeptic and the believer was handled. It's a good theme to have, but the audience is always let in on the trick in episodes. We know it's actually monsters/aliens rather than some Scooby-Doo stuff meaning the skeptic is always wrong. I'm just saying, a bit more ambiguity wouldn't go amiss.

Also, I started watching the X-Files after a long history of watching Doctor Who and Star Trek - two shows where all the weird stuff going on is explained (mostly). I don't mind weird stuff going on and being unexplained (the original Twilight Zone is one of my favourite shows of all time), but when it's done in a semi-serialised format it kind of grates on me. I've always thought not explaining something in a plot is more often symptomatic of laziness rather than good storytelling.

I sort of want to slog through the rest of the fourth season (I had four episodes to go when I stopped) because I've heard the fifth season is really good, but after that I've heard it goes downhill fast. And from what I can tell, the overarching story is a load of senseless wank. It's yet another sci-fi show where the creator didn't bother to plan things out beforehand. I wish more writers took a leaf out of J. Michael Straczynski's book. *sigh*

It does seem that way when you realize they started recycling episodes.

1. People are found dead with a missing (insert organ here). Culprit is a man monster that feeds on (insert same organ here), otherwise he will die.

2. People are found dead in an isolated region. Culprit is a insect/virus/fungus that has evolved to (insert scary action here).

And oh no! It's still on the loose at the end of the episode!

I loved the new "Event Series" and can't wait until it comes out on blu-ray. Having an interest in the Roswell UFO stuff (X-Files or not), I thought the first episode was epic...especially when they showed the crash at the beginning and the "ARV". Also, that "conspiracy of men" theory Tad O'Malley and Mulder were talking about was some scary shit. I'm thinking I'm in the minority, but I'd love to see more of O'Malley in future episodes should they get made (which will probably happen given how good the ratings were).

I just got into xfiles and watched/listened to the new mini season at work. The first and the last episodes were just godawdul and didn't make sense. Why they waste Joel McHale like that.

I've been listening to season 1 when I can at work too. I also saw the first movie last weekend. It was ok, however there was too much "scully?!l" "mulder?!?!" In the film. You know, like the "Mr. Beardsley?!" Scene from the mst3k "squirm".

Season 10 (the new "event" episodes) will be released to DVD and Blu-ray on June 14th. Hell yeah, pre-ordered.

Also, this:

Sounds like it could be awhile before further episodes are made, but goddamn, I hope they do get made at all. It would be kind of a dick move to end it where they left off.

The X-Files that was COPS was better than The Simpsons that had X-Files in it.
Too bad we didn't get a Power Rangers / X-Files crossover so Mulder could get roped into doing stupid shit while the Bulk and Skull music played.
