This whole thing reminds me of a time when a friend was at a con around the time of the Ferguson riots. Someone was running around taping up pictures of swastikas at the hotel. Friend was posting and texting people about how skeered they were and how some of the black congoers were (allegedly) going home. I attempted to point out that it was probably some teenager who wanted to freak them out because they thought it was funny. Friend (who is now an ex-friend by the way) got very angry at me and I couldn’t understand why. Now I know. Not only was this exciting since they knew they weren’t in any real danger, it also helped them pretend they were the rebel alliance against the empire. They could screech and reee about a specific physical thing rather than a mere possibility existing only in their heads. All over some kid with a pencil and scotch tape. Now they had a story about how their gay ass was once threatened by nazis at a convention. It made them feel important and even powerful.
