Claire had only a vague sense of awareness, if that. She may have been physically uncomfortable; it's possible that they filmed the family segments later, after Claire had worked out a gas bubble or had a diaper change. The lack of awareness is part and parcel of what makes the Hartley interview a low point for the channel: in every other interview, the "Special" kid shows at least some awareness of what's going on, and tries to interact with (or at least react to) Malibu Ken in some fashion. Here, despite all the pretense, there is zero reaction, and zero hints of awareness. None. The girls could have been held by a giant rutabega speaking Cantonese, and they would have had the same reactions.

The girls got jack shit out of that interview, and it wasn't conducted for them: it was done for their attention-whoring parents. It was done to give Gwennie a new platform, and a new audience to inundate with her bullshit about Claire and Lola's "feisty" personalities and how they "connect on different levels" (right down to convincing Malibu Ken that they had a "spirit connection" because the girls squeezed his thumbs: a basic reflex that newborns display). That interview is the Hartleys in a nutshell, and Malibu Ken enabled them.

As to how does he profit. He can't take a direct share of the funds like an owner or shareholder could, but many charities give cushy paychecks to their executive boards, often filled with C level execs who could never actually make it in the corporate world. Even if it's not that grift, he would be entitled to a paycheck with performance bonus structure for services rendered, same as an employee at a normal company.

It should be noted that while the organization would be tax exempt, he would not if he is going the employee paycheck route. And would still be paying payroll tax, so it's not a free ride.

That said, if it's a 501, we don't really need to speculate. We just need someone who isn't a lazy asshole like i am to go and look at the public financial disclosures. But jfc fuck trying to use the IRSs database tools.
