Said fan artist got hired by IDW, was shoved onto a series of shit comics just for the pay since his dad has had major ailments for years, got cucked out of making a comic about his preferred kodachrome equine and was put on drawing a comic based on that Bratz knockoff, and in the end was left to draw Sonic because the only option besides that is drawing comics for the new era which will probably have sales just as low as the G4 comics were at the end. Seriously, I dunno what the fuck Pencils was thinking going with IDW when everyone was telling him to read the giant neon warning signs saying to do the exact opposite.
I guess it was just too enticing to be able to draw official pony content.
To my knowledge, the story with the comic he got cucked on is even worse than you made it sound. The artist, who was supposed to draw that other comic, apparently was slacking on/not getting done with it, so they shoved it onto Pencils. Said other artist was the one who then got to draw the comic featuring Pencils' waifu, instead. To me, that reeks of malicious intent, but I am not privy to the inner workings of IDW. Superficially, it just seems to be yet another slam-dunk, cant-fuck-this-up opportunity, which was then promptly fucked up.
If we’re talking about corporate fuck ups, the IDW run of the comics is a whole different can of worms to open. It doesn't help that many, perhaps most of them, even, really seem to hate the new reboot or whatever. Can't imagine any of them are thrilled to recruit people when all there is atm is some netflix production.
The shorts they are running on the G5 YouTube channel are actually pretty decent. Not great, but not terrible. And they are producing a lot of them. And the new pilot episode for the main show on Netflix was ok. The characters are competently endearing, really. Even though you only realise that the characters have potential once the shorts actually explore them in characterful slice of life situations.
The more traditional 2-D style of the shorts is definitely better than the main 3-D stuff they want to go with, though.
I think these new characters and world will gradually grow on people over time and carve out their own little niche. Not as big as G4, though. It will just be another thing in the world, like any other Fandom. Which is probably for the best.

I see you're living up to your name. Let's be real here, G5 is a "great reset" to try and distance the brand from the bronies, while at the same time, throwing them a bone in the form of the IDW comics. All animated material is aimed at preschool audiences, which considering you're going into the same market as Peppa Pig, Paw Patrol, and Cocomelon, it's pretty saturated, and there's no real room for another IP. From what I've seen with G5 thus far is... meh. There's no real hook other than "it's a new generation of MLP." G5 will likely have a short lifecycle, I give it 3 more years before G6 or a 5.5.

Let's just say the writing was far less consistent and sometimes completely off in the weeds compared to the show. I'd complain, but then realize that unlike a serious franchise like say, Halo, for example, there isn't enough value to worth getting made over.
