I only know for the state of Arizona, but their levels of probation are unsupervised, supervised, intensive (basically house arrest, you have to get permission to leave) and ankle monitor (you have the device and a set schedule, can't leave unscheduled even with permission). A big fail like a failed drug test sends you right back to jail, while a more minor infraction like being late coming home can send you to a stricter version of probation.
