Once they found out that the violent crimes were fake, they still needed to investigate the origin of the messages which themselves are a crime covered by the warrant. Saying "someone was impersonating me" isn't good enough at that point, especially if the messages appeared to come from an email or number that is actually his. They already have the warrant so they might as well take the items they need to determine if that "someone else" was actually him. The issue for Lucas here is that they could find any number of other incriminating things while trying to determine the origin of the messages. The advantage for him is that outside political pressure will probably force them to move on and not pursue anything they might happen to find.
