Sonic the Hedgehog Movie

I'm not sure whether this would be more appropriate in multimedia as well, but since this is a broad topic with implications on the changes to Sega that it would be more appropriate here.

So Sega has announced they are coming out with a new Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2018. Furthermore, Sega is likely to pump out more movies in the future as they have merged with another company, Sammy Holdings.

In addition to this, the company is developing an Integrated Resort in Incheon, a city in South Korea, which will house a casino, hotels, shopping malls and various forms of entertainment. Their plan is to attract between 30 to 40 million tourists every year. The entire venture will cost between 800 billion to 1 trillion yen to build. Satomi says that the dwindling Japanese population is part of why it’s important to attract as many tourists as possible, which will give the local economy a much-needed boost.

Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie scheduled for release in 2018. Last we heard, Upright Citizens Brigade vets Evan Susser and Van Robichaux had been tapped to write a screenplay for the Sonic movie, which will combine elements of CGI and live-action and will most likely feature some of the blue hedgehog’s famous villains, like Doctor Robotnik. It’s been a while since Sega and Sony have said anything about the film, which is where CEO Hajime Satomi comes in.

So the console market isn't doing so well in Japan and Sega has been focusing more on mobile devices. Sega wants to dip their fingers in more markets.

There is little information about what the movie and we don't know who will be directing it. I'm sure we'll all be looking forward to confirmations concerning the color of Sonic's arms. Hopefully, they will address this critical issue soon as well as what the plot will be about. Although the official Sonic twitter account had this to say.

You would think people would realize by now that making live action movie adaptations of cartoons and movies usually doesn't work out too well.

I mean, what's wrong with going the Sonic Boom route and going full CG? Last I checked, the show's kinda successful with its target audience.

The only new we are getting out of this is the release date.

In an ideal world, we'd get a feature-length version of this:

Realistically, we're going to get Kevin James as a bumbling everyman who spends too much time at work and not enough time with his wife and young son until Sonic and his friends literally fall into his life and teach him about the meaning of happiness and family whilst saving the world.
