EVO 2022 came with an assortment of hype moments over the weekend, including the most incredible “Cell Yell” I’ve heard since Dragon Ball FighterZ’s first season in 2018. Sprinkled throughout the tournament were a few announcements, too, such as the welcome reveal of rollback netcode for more fighting games. But perhaps most exciting was news that classic fighter Bridget is the next DLC character coming to Guilty Gear Strive. What’s more, in the day or so since, arcade mode footage revealed that Bridget has come out as a trans girl. Talk about a based W!

Bridget was first introduced in 2002's Guilty Gear XX, presenting as a very cute boy who instantly stole the hearts of fans. Though born as one of two twin boys to a multi-billionaire couple, Bridget’s gender presentation was decidedly feminine despite their use of masculine pronouns. (Official reason: convoluted anime bullshit.) However, with Bridget’s official return as a playable character in Strive as part of the game’s $25 Season Pass 2, ArcSys has given them a “come out” moment where they announce they do, in fact, identify as a girl.

An adept yo-yo user, Bridget’s dialogue in Striveshows her becoming comfortable in expressing her trans identity, telling deuteragonist Ky Kisukeand U.S. Secretary of Defense (lol) Goldlewis Dickinson that, “[calling me] Cowgirl is fine. Because…I’m a girl!”

Yas, Queen, live your truth! We love to see it. In fact, plenty of folks online celebrated the reveal with fan art and memes. Someone even created a mod for Bridget that sees her donning the blue, pink, and white colors of the Trans pride flag. It’s cool!

Kotaku has reached out to Arc System Works for comment.

Not everyone was thrilled about Bridget’s trans-ness, though, which shouldn’t come as a surprise in this space. Ready to dismiss their identity wholesale, there are plenty of gross tweets decrying ArcSys giving us an actual trans character in Strive. While there’s some nuance to the idea that the studio could be “erasing a character’s previous identity,” as one tweeter put it, most of the negative discourse oscillating around Bridget is framed as bad-faith arguments over “grooming.”

The negative response toward Bridget’s coming out is disconcerting to say the least. At a time when the U.S. government is penning legislation aimed at attacking the queer experience, getting representation in media—especially in games—should be seen as a boon. It reassures folks in our community that it’s OK to be who you are, and how you identify is both accepted and loved. As a nonbinary individual who sees a bit of themselves in the elegant “grim reaper” Testament, Strive’s first enby character, I’m absolutely living for Bridget coming into her own.

Mind the fact that Bridget was forced to dress like a girl due to a superstition of same sex twins. So grooming won.
Almost like in Vinland Saga...
Localization deserves the wall.
This crap makes me want to learn Japanese, but I'd have to figure out how to fit in a morning class and whatever assessments in a 9 to 5.

Supposedly, your best bet is to learn the kana (alphabet) which is easy enough to do, then learn the grammar (Tae Kim has a free web book on it), then learn Kanji (a nightmare hellscape of madness) as you have time.

If you know the Kana and the Grammar, and how to look up Kanji as you go, you're 90% of the way there.

Kana: Heisig's book is good, it's what I used. It won't take you too long. https://www.amazon.com/Remembering-...Syllabaries-ebook-dp-B086QJ2LCK/dp/B086QJ2LCK

Grammar: Tae Kim's web course / book is available on his website: https://guidetojapanese.org/learn/
The collected PDF is available for download or you can snag it on Amazon for $5. https://www.amazon.com/Guide-Japanese-Grammar-approach-learning-ebook-dp-B00HZYUVV2/dp/B00HZYUVV2

Alternatively, the Barrons books by Nobuo and Carol Akiyama are very good, but I suspect they may be out of print or something. They're not available in the Kindle store anymore (I bought them already, though, so at least at one point they were) but I've never NOT seen them in a bookstore's Japanese language section. They're very small books, a little bigger than a deck of playing cards, but dense. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0764147749

Kanji... Heisig's supposed to be the best, but "learning Kanji" is a meme in Japanese study for a reason. There's like 2000+ of them and you basically have to memorize them. They were all pinched from Chinese over the course of a few thousand years and modified and simplified and the like, often revolving around cultural or even mythological stories. For example, IIRC, the Kanji for "Noisy" is the kanji for women repeated 3 times. Because if you get 3 women together, they won't shut up. There are tricks -- Heisig suggests visualization tricks based on stories you make up about each kanji, Kodansha suggests tearing it down to chunks that the kanji are made up of -- "radicals." I never could retain the Kanji for any length of time.

Heisig's book 1 is supposed to be the best, book 2 and 3 are more for college students or the like: https://www.amazon.com/Remembering-Kanji-Complete-Japanese-Characters/dp/0824835921
Kodansha's version is similarly laid out: https://www.amazon.com/Kodansha-Kanji-Learners-Course-Step/dp/1568365268

I'd have to check but I wasn't happy with the Kindle version of Heisig's book. I believe the font he used to show stroke order doesn't translate to the Kindle eInk devices properly? I prefer these books in print, either way.

If you'd prefer a Textbook and class style flow to things, the Genki series is basically your best bet. There are two versions of the Genki series, the Kana or Romanji (English letters) version. It is VASTLY BETTER to do it in Kana, because that will reinforce your ability to read Kana, but it also is a pain in the ass at the start.

... Having said that, it looks like the new 3rd edition of the series combines the Kana and Romanji versions, having both on the same page. Best of both worlds. https://www.amazon.com/Genki-Third-Integrated-Elementary-Japanese/dp/4889969446

Other stuff:

There's a website to help with Heisig's memorization technique. I thought it was called "Reviewing the Kanji" but I guess he asked them to rename it? Searching for that now leads to Kajji Koohii, which has the same layout that I remember: https://kanji.koohii.com/

A major part of the Heisig method is flashcard reps. Koohii has a system for it with crowd sourced mnemonics, but Anki was the hotness back in the day: https://apps.ankiweb.net/

If you want I believe all of these books are available on z-lib. Savvy?

We have literally gone back to the 80s in terms of the quality of video game translations.

Actually no, fuck that. The Dragon Warrior games had Elizabethan English which was really cool. This is actually worse than the 80s.
Those mistranslations in the 80s were due to Japanese people who had poor English skills, hence “all your bases are belong to us”. I don’t blame Americans for that.

Translations now are intentionally misconstruing what was said in the original text due to agendas, from anime to video games.

Plus All Your Base actually brought joy to millions.

This BS about Bridget and Testament being trans or whatever is BS invented by people who were never into Guilty Gear in the first place.

US localizers have been messing with different things, including translations since the 80's. For example, the US manuals of the 8-bit Castlevania games did omitted numerous info and butchered the surprisingly well written backstories of the games, sacrificing them with nonsene WWE-level script writing. Attached to the post is the US story of Castlevania III.

This link http://www.vgmuseum.com/mrp/cv3/documents/CV3J.txt is the translated Japanese version.

I am reminded of pondering about as to why woke morons aren't taking advantage of the fictional medium to enact what they wanna be. For example, I know I can never be a Elf, an Orc, or a god in the real world so why not put it into fiction? Yet these trannies/tranny-chasers, write their characters to be self-victimizing trannies instead of writing themselves as women

They just can't get fantasy. Look at the one character in RWBY, May, as that creature is named. Not only the character is a tranny, but was voiced by one and has the same whiny dilemmas it enjoys in the real world. When the character was first revealed to be a tranny in Twitter by Rooster Teeth, and the same was for the voice actor, I already determined that the season following the creature's first appearance (which actually happened), there would be a scene where it's gonna whine.

Even in the fantasy medium, they cannot take advantage of it to attain true happiness yet wanna remain insecure If that freak (May's VA) is so intent on being a woman, why not make the character a woman? It is as if May was intentionally used as a self-insert of the VA. Still wants to remain a man pretending to be a woman.

Localizers have been a problem the entire time, but the nature of the problem certainly has changed.

Gaming localization companies in the 80s were lead by people literally too high on cocaine to even make it in Hollywood or the music industry. That's a PHENOMINAL amount of cocaine. They didn't give a shit about the product, just about getting it out fast enough that the hookers and blow weren't interrupted.

However in recent years -- literally since around the time GamerGate started, although honestly it started a few years before that -- you've had the localizers putting their shitty politics into everything.

The problem is, of course, the same as Marvel is infamously experiencing: Woke idiots work for peanuts because the ability to activist all over other people is worth more to them than money, since daddy's credit card pays the rent and they think a marxist revolution is literally any day now. These companies all work on razor thin margins and quickly get addicted to paying almost nothing for wokescolds to thumb in halfassed work. Tearing these idiots out by the roots is going to destroy a lot of formerly healthy companies due to the damage they've done, the damage they'll do on the way out (once the firings begin they WILL sue claiming firing a shitty employee that pretends to be a mythical 3rd gender is a hate crime), and the fact that budgets will have to fundamentally change to keep employees that aren't retards on staff.

What I don't get is why the woke cult just seemed to spring up out of fucking nowhere and hit everything all at once around 2012ish. It's like the corrupted Universities finally put out a sufficiently insufferable batch of twats and they just immediately started to swarm, or some foreign manipulation campaign finally bore fruit.

I personally blame tumblr.

Maybe the foreign manipulation is from China just to spite them

If trans women are women, then why can't they identify with GG's women and instead have to have a groomed trans kid?

Is it because instinctively they knew they are nothing like the real women?
The reason they want to colonize the trap fandom is because unlike troons, traps actually pass as women. Colonizing the concept of trap would instantly make their feminine penises erect.

It's like some faux Elizabethan English too and even that's an improvement.

In the old days, there was also technical limitations. I don't remember where I saw it, but there was a documentary type video on Secret of Mana (SNES) and the entire game was translated by one guy, in less than a week. The work ethic aside, one of the problems is reworking a game for localization wasn't a thing; however many character spaces Japan programmed, that's how many you have, however many text boxes in a conversation Japan programmed, that's how many you have. So it wasn't just being good with the word and pen, it was literally trying to fit 20 pounds of Japanese into a 5 pound bag and trying to convey everything (which didn't happen). As for the timing, 2012 is when Millenials were getting into their late 20's and early 30's, meaning they're making middle management and above.

Exactly the same sentiments I have. I've been a viewer of EVO for more than a decade. Sad to see it in its present state.
Was there in person, and have been for a long while, it's all true. The amount of dudes in dresses and stockings this year was fucking frightening. It was bad enough that Sonic Fox was bringing dudes in full fursuits out, but the trannies and troons are making their presence known. The big issue is how Sony and some media company are now official owners of it, and brought Pokemane on. While I welcome the lack of hood shit, I'd be lying if I didn't say I enjoyed it from time to time, because it was more honest. Now it's entirely 100% corporate and don't want to upset the money.

I hate the motte-and-bailey bullshit these people pull. They always default to saying how important it is to make slight tweaks for the sake of localisation (idioms and cultural references etc), which is a fine argument in and of itself. However it's a shit argument when it comes to changes like this. This type of shit isn't localisation, it's imposing your headcanon on the rest of the world. Very frustrating.

He is drawn inside of a handcuff holding a teddy bear and they all embraced him. The respectable adults at TV tropes are going to mentally break themselves with the careful phrasing and doubling down. All they had to do was not pick the jailbait character from a mid game and they couldn't even do that

So uh, he didn't come out as trans.

There are 3 endings to the arcade mode. In both bad endings, defined as "you lost a round, get good you fucking scrub", he gives up trying to correct people and dejectedly says he's a girl. These are "Stage 7 Ending (Heart Lose)" and "Stage 8 Intro (Stage 7 Heart Lose) / Stage 8 Ending (Stage 7 Heart Lose)"

In the good ending, which you only get by doing a perfect run as him, he regains his confidence to come out to is family as male. They awkwardly as fuck don't say it exactly, but as his family and village's expectations are that he will live as female -- IIRC, his family doesn't even know he's alive, thinking that the church killed him when in reality they raised him as a girl -- the only "being proud of my true self" bullshit that makes sense is him coming out to his family as male. This is "Stage 8 Ending (Flawless Run and Win) " which unlocks Stage 9.

Notably early on in the arcade mode he corrects someone calling him a girl, saying that he's a boy, but his clothes are "a long story." (Both endings to Stage 1.)

The troons are just being insufferable cunts again, trying to colonize yet another hobby space out of spite and a desperate attempt to rewrite reality. (Bonus insufferable cunt crossover: TVTropes is currently banning anyone who uses male pronouns with Bridget for hate speech and doing a mass sitewide re-write to make him female and include some fanfiction from Tumblr about him coming out as trans in the "only ending to arcade mode.")

Oh, and there's translator fuckery involved, as well. The official bio of him on the US website SPECIFICALLY refuses to use any pronouns. The JP version uses male pronouns. Presumably, the localizers didn't want to use male pronouns on that page, but couldn't get away with female pronouns, so they just awkwardly use his name instead. The in game bio uses female pronouns, and in a sane world, would be fixed in the next patch.

And to quote some people on twitter, none of this is even a scandal in the Japanese community, which suggests the JP text is a whole lot less confusing.

None of the people calling him trans would be able to do a perfect run to get the good ending. Hell, most wouldn't even play the game. They just want muh representation.
