Part of becoming a grown-ass adult is learning that words only hurt if you allow them to hurt you and realizing that the words and opinions of people you don't know have no actual impact on your life. When you let "hurtful words" rustle your jimmies and get you all butthurt then you're giving power and influence over yourself to other people. Why would anyone want to give power to people they don't know? And, no, saying "I laugh when people say mean things about me!" isn't the same as just disregarding what they say because you're still calling attention to them and giving them that power over you. If you just disregard it and move on with your life, never acknowledging what they say, you take that power away from them.
