I love the fact that nobody pointed out how much noise an train generates while it's passing through town. It's not like people have to sleep in their fictional world where most of the roads have been replaced with passenger trains.

Unnecessary reminder on what the average train enthusiast looks like.

I watched a fair bunch of videos and read a high amount of posts written by these people and they seem to have a very retarded conception of history that is on par with the average cartoon about cavemen living with dinosaurs.
They actually believe that all modern cities were directly designed and built by car manufacturers lobbies.
I shit you not.

You can make a semi-convicing lie about that being true about the United States and its suburbs, but Europe, China... come the fuck on!

Cars weren't a common sight in my country until the 1960s and yet the claim cities like Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Oviedo, León, etc... that exist since the dawn of time are designed the way they are because car manufacturers.
they seem to think that prior to cars everybody just walked everywhere on foot and carried everything by hand
but in reality there were hand carts, and carts pulled by animals, and pack animals carrying stuff around, and animals to ride on, and carriages, etc.
that's what the roads were built around. at some point cars and trucks replaced the animals, but the roads stayed the same (except people replaced cobblestone with asphalt when it became widespread)

Yeah it's pretty much a bunch of posters who are trying (and failing) to group NJB and Strong towns into the anti-car lunatics category. The thread would have been much more entertaining if it was just the r/fuckcars subreddit
True, it doesn't look like he has any want to go to the extremes like r/fuckcars. Can't find anything about him actually doing any of that car vandalism crap, like the retards on that subreddit. Do I agree with most anything the guy says? No, but he sure isn't as awful as OP is making him out to be.

Thread still isn't funny. No cows.

I saw one.

Overplayed joke, but...
Kill all bikes, race car now!

This is MPLS Bike Wrath, or Bike Lane Bill on reddit. He's the crybully to end all crybullies and the bugman all bugmen aspire to be. He lost his license due to his severe anger issues and now rides a bike all over Minneapolis trying his hardest to find and escalate problems. My favorite incident from him was when he blared his obnoxious air horn and annoyed a pedestrian into throwing a cookie at him. He then followed the pedestrian while calling the cops to press charges of assault. Unfortunately I can no longer find this video, but I'm trying to dig it up.

This is what he looks like:

This image is from a puff piece CBS wrote for him.

Some of his common victims:

Swanson's meats has truck deliveries, and the geometry of their dock necessitates that drivers park against traffic and cross the road in order to back in and hit the dock. He gets very upset when drivers park in the bike lane to wait for a dock to be open. He has a whole playlist about this.

Rick's cabaret is some strip club that's otherwise not noteworthy, but there MPLS Bike Wrath got beaten up and had his bike stolen.

The video that best typifies his behavior is this one where he cuts off a USPS van and flips out when the USPS van doesn't like it, he flips his lid and screeches about being "assaulted".

His behavior got so autistic that even redditors got sick of him, with r/BikeCammers no longer tolerating his videos. So now he has his own echo chamber at r/CyclistsWithCameras where there are even more videos from other people who behave the same way MPLS Wrath does.

MPLS Bike Wrath and many of these cyclist people also retweet or support anti-car, anti-freedom rhetoric on the basis of their safety.

Shit like this convinces me that it was never about improving infrastructure, it's about annoying people in cars and having feigned moral superiority as you do it. It's why these people despise Elon Musk. Yeah he has some goofy ideas but his heart is at least somewhat in the right place.

NOOOO YOU CAN'T JUST USE TECHNOLOGY TO FIGURE THIS OUT YOU HAVE TO MAKE YOURSELF UNCOMFORTABLE. ITS NOT FIGHTING CLIMATE CHANGE IF YOURE NOT MISERABLE YOU CANT JUST EAT MEAT AND DRIVE YOUR CARS NOOOO.

Elon Musk only proposes whacky projects like the Hyperloop to discourage investment in viable forms of public transit. I don't get how this isn't obvious to people, the guy owns a fucking car company.

Imagine being proud that your country's infrastructure is like that of a third world country, even economic basketcases like Colombia and Bolivia are better than the US in this respect.

Leonard fucking Shaner. I was looking for that thread yesterday to showcase a point: That if you want to be the head of the Cult of the Train, there's a queue you need to join.

Also:

Elon Musk.
I'm quite surprised that the neo-Urbanists aren't big Musk fanboys, what with his outrageous and unworkable transport ideas.

That man is honestly insufferable. He and his kind have completely shat up that bikecameras subreddit. It used to be mountain bikers showing off their performance on difficult trails. Now it's only "Bill" and his friends playing wannabe traffic police.

His video about people parking in his bike lane is also stupid - he's standing right next to a tree, just lock the bicycle to it with your bike chain and walk to the shop.

Why did he get featured by CBC? Behaving like a bloody baboon and posting the results to YouTube isn't newsworthy - if it were the likes of "Ocks TV" would have had documentaries about themselves long ago.

"Pranks On A Bike! Gone Wrong! Gone Full Tard!"

Also, @UmQasaan - if you seriously want to answer my question about the necessity for all the neologisms and special terminology, you don't need to quote me. Just @ me and answer the thing.

I don’t think publicly calling someone who actually did a good service a pedophile “has their heart in the right place.” They are just a raging autist who can’t handle criticism.

Also, I have never received a quote from @Cyberpunk Panatela about anything until now, so you should probably take your meds

>oh no not heckin mean tweets this invalidates everything else he's ever done

This is seriously just Trump 2.0. Yeah there's plenty of valid criticisms of Elon Musk, but there are very few people in the public sphere that seem to be proposing solutions to these problems that aren't variations of "accept lower standards of living and be happy"
Calling somebody a pedo publicly isnt just “le mean tweets”. It’s being a slanderous cunt, probably one of the worst things you can say to actively tear down someone’s reputation. Especially when the guy he labeled did a service to society while Musk was sitting on his fat ass sperging about it.

The only source for that tweet is this excerpt from a biography about Musk:
1660640232046.png
Note that Musk is complaining about the waste and corruption, not the existence of the train:
The sixty-billion dollar bullet train they’re proposing in California would be the slowest bullet train in the world at the highest cost per mile. They’re going for records in all the wrong places.
Musk blurted out a wild idea for a faster train because he’s an autist whose mouth moves faster than his brain. The hyper loop wasn’t some elaborate plot to sell Teslas. This is confirmed by an interview (Archive) with the biographer who wrote the above excerpt:
When I spoke with Vance, who is currently a senior writer at Bloomberg, he called Marx’s conclusion “vaguely accurate but a disingenuous take on the situation.” From Vance’s point of view, Musk’s initial announcements on Hyperloop were “more of a reaction to how underwhelming California’s high-speed rail [proposal] was.”

Musk first discussed the idea of a Hyperloop-style high-speed train system in 2012; a year later, in August 2013, Musk published a white paper suggesting a design for a Los Angeles-to-San Francisco route where pressurized passenger capsules would travel through a tube system operating under partial vacuum to reach speeds up to 700 mph. In our conversation, Vance described Musk’s proposal as strictly a thought experiment, something Musk had no intention of working on. “Tesla and SpaceX were at more precarious positions than they are today,” Vance told me. “He had plenty on his plate. Elon put all the ideas out there in the open domain for anyone to use.”

I pointed out to Vance why this notion — that Musk dreamed up Hyperloop as an attempt to distract from a more conventional, perhaps more realistic, rail project — seems logical. Musk has repeatedly portrayed public transit as a dangerous, distasteful hellscape, and he sells a lot of Teslas in California.

“He’s the world’s richest man, he’s used to his private planes, so maybe public transit is a little beneath him these days,” Vance said with a chuckle. “I honestly do not think that was the goal of Hyperloop at all. I think if there was a better public transport system, my impression — and I think it’s genuine — is that Elon would be all for it.”

Vance then brought up a valid point: “In all this time we’ve been talking about high-speed rail, there’s still almost none that’s built.... In that time, Elon built a worldwide electric car charging network and shifted the entire world onto electric cars.”
“The Boring Company is one of [Musk’s] ventures that I’ve never understood, really,” Vance replied. “I totally get your point. In general, though, there’s no part of me that believes Elon was trying to kill public transport so people would stay in cars. I just don’t believe that.... Elon didn’t even need to bemoan the high-speed rail project for it to undermine itself.”
“So did Elon try to sell a green project to make money? Or did he just have an idea and blurt it out,” I asked Vance.

“I’m 99.9-percent sure it’s the latter,” Vance tells me.
Also, Musk was right. Since he said that, ten years have passed, the cost has more than doubled and the train still doesn’t exist. He had zero influence over the California government who have proceeded with money laundering high speed rail project unimpeded.

With all of this mass debating that should've been contained in the Autistic Thunderdome, this thread is well on its way to become infected.
It's infected because there are a choice few individuals who think that because a bird may walk like a duck, quack like a duck, hang out with ducks and have a lot of admirers in the form of ducks, that they are still chickens because they are fans of their work and can't imagine for a second other people can and will call them ducks.

But he didn't just "blurt out an idea", did he? He established a test track and ran a competition for college students to test competing designs and gave TV interviews where he talked about it as if it were definitely happening. The fact he later backtracked and admitted he never planned to actually build the thing just made his previous actions look even more cynical in hindsight. From 2013 to 2018 he was absolutely trying to create the impression that this was something that was feasible and was in the works and not just some hypothetical alternative to existing systems.

Also, Musk was right. Since he said that, ten years have passed, the cost has more than doubled and the train still doesn’t exist. He had zero influence over the California government who have proceeded with money laundering high speed rail project unimpeded.
That's a problem with the incompetence of the state government of California, not with high speed rail. Plenty of countries around the world (including many that are much poorer than the US) have implemented them successfully. HSR has been proven to work, hyperloop hasn't.
