In fairness widespread food shortages have been common in Russia for centuries and the February Revolution started as a demonstration over shortages of bread.
There's a story to that or at least how I heard it happen. For some reason or another they decided to kill off the sparrow population because reasons. They did so by chasing them around banging woks and whatnot until the sparrows dropped dead of exhaustion. Sparrows are (or were?) considered a delicacy in China so they cooked and ate them afterward. They initially celebrated this as a good idea but then reality hit... guess what was keeping the insect population in check? With nothing to keep it under control the insect population exploded and wound up eating all the crops. I believe this resulted in the starvation of 25 million people.

North Korea went through that as well but a lot of that had to do with Russia not giving them more aid, some natural disasters, Kim Jong-Il being a complete and utter bastard. There are stories of cannibalism during that time. How accurate they are we don't really know but when people literally have no food they will do terrible things.
They were the architects of their own demise. Mao wasn't exactly a brainbox but he believed he was. So the sparrows all died because of it and people suffered because who could have known that birds eat bugs? It's not like it's common knowledge or anything.

Of course but that's how any society with very rigid rules would be run especially when they emphasize the collective over the individual or the individual over the collective. Objectivism is all about, "I got mine, you get yours" and that you are responsible for yourself and nobody else. Whereas Communism is all about, "for the betterment of the state, not the individual". In the end they both say the same thing about the parasites that don't work and get stuff for nothing. Which in and of itself if quite funny especially considering how Ayn Rand, the one that came up with Objectivism, was a refugee from Stalinist Russia.
Nobody likes China except maybe North Korea but nobody with a brain likes them either.

It happened in most Communist countries at some point or another. The Viets largely did it as a symbolic gesture rather than actually being hungry; intimidate the enemy some. In NK it was a real thing and this was to prevent the family from starving. I’m told it’s no longer practiced in China but I have no idea if that’s actually true. I also don’t want Hooves here getting any ideas (though it would be funny if he was advocating for Cannibalism when previously he advocated for Veganism).

Fishing was probably banned like foraging, people would get shot trying to comb through already harvested fields. You'd be less keen on eating grass after watching your neighbors die horribly after eating grass and dirt soup. We can't digest the stuff. Bark can be made into a bread but it's incredibly labor intensive, and it's more a Nordic tradition. The slav peasants might not have known.
