Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

In better news, however, the old Soviet Treasure Island film has somehow become a meme.

I had a videotape of the English dub of this when I was child, and it left impression on me that I got a DVD of it later on. Saw the whole thing in Ruskie with subtitles on YT later but skipped the live action segments
i still haven't read the book, but i want to

I'm surprised you'd think animation from the USSR would either be considered unimportant or wouldn't have the best effort put into in it by communists, or if they did it would be propaganda by the state heavily regulated, but no. They actually went all in and put effort into their cartoons. Though I'm noticing a lot fo the popular soviet cartoons are all being made after Stallin died or as the USSR began to open up to western ideas more as it was in its final days.

There was no real animation industry in the USSR before the war. Soyuzmultfilm started up in 1936, but then the war came around and the animators had to evacuate behind the Urals. There was also no color film in the USSR before the war either - they took it from the Germans after the Allied occupation began. (Harsh, you may say, but when you go on a genocidal invasion some things are fair game.)

There are two reasons why these films were so good and memorable. For one, the animators had relatively free hands (there were still things you couldn't do, as there is here at Western companies) because their films brought in awards and prestige to the government. And for the other, well, everyone has to be entertained, and the officials in charge knew that. There were many fine comedies made in the Soviet Union that everyone in modern Russia still knows and loves, but you never hear about them in the West. Same with all the other Eastern Bloc countries.

Soviet and in particular Russian culture has always placed great pride in their artists, musicians, and performers, perhaps out of a reaction against their ingrained inferiority complex, because they've always been treated as backwards by the West in general and Western Europe specifically.

This is why a lot of borderline "formalists," to use a Soviet term of abuse, like Shostakovich as an example, remained (at least intermittently) in favor even during the time of Stalin, and were not put up against a wall like anyone else who fell under such suspicion. He was one of the few people formally denounced by Stalin who somehow remained alive. Shostakovich was even a member of the Supreme Soviet at one point during Stalin's reign and after Stalin's death, from 1962 until the end of his life.

Say what you like about the Soviet Union, they definitely treasured their artists, so long as they didn't explicitly say a word about politics (other than denouncing the West of course).

So true, I'm sure it was a tricky tightrope to walk over there when it came to how far an artist could go. Some obviously emigrated/defected for that reason.

Seems CN is running a slightly less TTG-filled marathon for the weekend prior to Labour Day. Definitely welcome after all that disastrous HBO Max news.

Let's hope it's a beginning of a trend to remove slowly but surely TTG.

Also and sorry if someone else already mentioned it, there's one guy on Twitter did one fanart about the Tiny Toons reboot. https://archive.ph/8fwBR

That Aquaman show was by that same bitchflake who made Thundercats Roar. Two pump and dumps in the span of four years. Embarrassing and deserved.

Maomao being on that list hurts. Uncle Grandpa too, the two episodes and SU crossover I saw weren't bad.

They did this for another cartoon recently, didn't they? Just removed any mention of it on their twitter? Or was that something else? I don't remember.

If this means Maomao Season 2 isn't happening anymore my nephews and I will be bummed out. :heart-empty:And pissed off I was hoping to finally meet Maomao's "legendary" sisters.

Yabba Dabba Dinosaurs is getting rid of yet Jellystone still exists.
I guess putting trannies in your kids cartoon can only work until it doesn't anymore.

I'm glad that particular scene turned into a meme. The movie itself is actually quite good.
The meme itself for those who don't watch ruskie toons:

Wait so it's NOT the aquaman show by hanna barberra they're dumping?

All jokes aside it kinda sucks they're dumping mighty magiswords. IT's not that..great a show, but remember the creator Kyle had dreamed up the show as far back as his senior year in high school and had been trying to get it made as a show ever since. Imagine coming up with an idea for a cartoon while still in School then spending almost your life trying to get it made having it brought to life after almost 20 years only to have it memory holed because of an unsavory reputation you develop.

The artists, like I said, gave the government prestige and that's why they let them do anything they liked - so long as they didn't go too far. Jiri Trnka, in Czechoslovakia, for example.

Do you know why they're doing this? Apparently it's to save money by not paying residuals to anyone who worked on those shows.

Looking at this timeline for 9/3, one would think Ben 10 isn’t being shown a lot of love when it gets the 6 A.M. time slot. Next to TTG, they show a lot more to Gumball and Steven Universe.

Personally, the former is better than the latter, but the Bean Mouth still reigns on.

This wasn't because of the #NewDeal4Animation thing was it? Did they come to some terms and unionize or this was something pre-existing coming to a head? It was hard to follow any real updates with all the picketing photo-ops and horror stories flooding the tag.

Sounds like Kyle got Thief and the Cobbler'd in a way. All these years spent on one project to fly high and it fell flat on its ass.

They did actually come up with a new contract and it was ratified last month. There was some change in how animation writers got royalties, plus various other things - it used to be you could only take leave to raise your child, but now you can take leave to take care of a sick family member.

On the other hand, the fact that original Ben 10 and not reboot Ben 10 is on the block is surprising, especially considering its age relative to most others on it.

Same goes for the Teen Titans S1 finale (which is what I'm guessing is meant by "The Apprentice") and Trouble in Tokyo

I actually like TTG, so I will be sad to see it go, but it is definitely it’s time. I wonder what it’s replacement as schedule dominator will be since TTG was just a member of the problem? Previously Johnny Test and Scooby Doo were the non-stop airing series, so CN will likely find another.

Gumball is unironically one of CN’s biggest cash cows apparently. It is weird to think about as Gumball, while still great in its own right, was easily the weakest of the 2010s revival trio. At least Adventure Time lives on from the 3, by some miracle, meanwhile Regular Show is just dead.

I thought they wanted PPG 2016 dead and buried? Kinda amazed it and Adventure Time got showings.

What is a cartoon that only you remember - only you saw it when it was new, nobody else remembers it, and anyone you try to tell about it thinks you made it up?

I'm gonna put in the spoilers the intros of some of the cartoons I've watched that I think are obscure enough to be interesting:

Italian cartoon based on the same comic book series.

French cartoon inspired by the German novel Satanarchaeolidealcohellish Notion Potion.

Another Italian comic book adaptation

Couldn't even find the animated intro on YouTube for this French cartoon.
I remember it being like a mix of Ren n' Stimpy and Earthworm Jim.

The most notable thing about this cartoon is that Arthur is voiced by Rik Mayall.

French cartoon that got a videogame and a 3D film.

French cartoon by Millimages who are better known for Corneil & Bernie.

French cartoon about various characters trying to kill a dragon.

From the people that brought you Totally Spies!, here's a third adaptation of an Italian comic book.

This cartoon has a surprisingly intricate backstory but I'll be short. In 2001 Italian satirician and animator Andrea Zingoni started a web series about a rooster that got sent into the web and I guess with nothing else to do made parodies of songs and topical things. This version of Gino was aimed at adolescents rather than children, one of his most popular songs is Tu vuo' fa' 'o talebano which is about Osama Bin Laden.
In 2006 Andrea released the TV Series version of Gino with the help of RAI (Italian Radiotelevision) for a younger audience.
The earliest appearance of Gino is in Andreas' 1995 video Gino the Chicken lost in the web.

There's definitely more cartoons like this but I think this post is long enough.
