There was a couple of bits of weird gender graffiti mixed with some anarchist stuff last time I was in Rome. It tended to be by the universities, so I'm guessing in the San Lorenzo area (but not the really working class bits that are super based/ran by far-right criminal gangs.)
I don't think I've ever seen anyone say that trans men don't belong in lesbian spaces since most lesbians just see them as mentally ill butch women. I have seen, however, gay men tell them they don't belong in gay male spaces. Because they're women.

I think it was the internet in general. By giving them the freedom to come up with online personas and curate what they wanted to see and join circles with people who share common interests, it allowed these types to grow/spread. Don't forget the reputation of Tumblr before December 2018.
At least on Tumblr they were being crazy in much smaller groups, on a site with a lot more (perceived) anonymity than Twitter. When Tumblr banned porn, all of the weirdos who couldn't cope with the idea of not having a constant stream of porn everywhere they went fled to Twitter, obviously. But the real problem with that specifically is that Twitter is partly inhabited by normal people. Now all of the worst of the worst freaks that were previously contained in an enclosure of sorts can tweet their opinions at actual, real life politicians who make laws and here we are.

This is sadly accurate. Tumblr was what ignited the social contagion (LiveJournal played a role too- it was full of the exact same crowd of "fannish" losers and many big Tumblr accounts were people who started on LJ.) But when the crackdown happened and they dispersed, the normies became infected.
