Worked a bit in the publishing industry so I can testify that's not really the case. Respectable literary agents are busy as hell and can drop a book if it doesnt hook them in the first few paragraphs. His logline and his pitch had to be really good for them to even give it a chance. Agents drop submissions because they're boring or don't see potential in the work or author. Most of the time they don't email back, so I'm actually more inclined to believe DN when he says he's good since *two* agents showed interest.
Are these publishers in the USA or overseas? You do have to keep in mind he might have submitted these to publishers in the Philippines for example which probably have less stringent standards.
I think this used to be the case as self publishing through platforms like Amazon is rather new, but from everything I've heard many authors who have published in the past through agencies have said it's actually easier and rather cheap to use services like Amazon which now mimic print to demand almost in the same fashion getting a set of T-shirts made.
I don't think ppl particularly care about Rust. Its the proximity voice and the random collabs of ppl that don't really collab usually if ever.
