Saints Row thread

I've been rewatching the SR3 power trailer, and man I remember how excited it got me for the game. I didn't have any real passion for the franchise, but that got me fired up like nobody's business, and also did a great job of establishing the characters in a few seconds - you can tell who the leader is, you can tell Gat would die for him even without knowing their history, Kinzie doesn't give a shit while she's on the computer, Pierce show boats, etc.

I've watched Nu Saints trailer few times and could only tell you anything about the characters because of leaked footage. "Get the fuck away from my friends" is such a dumb line, especially when you dickheads picked that fight to begin with!

Just give me another five minutes of Oleg throwing goons off a roof.
I hate to be fair to this game but SR2 did the same thing. Cutscene for completing the last Ronin mission has The Boss tell Akuji Sr. that his son shouldn't have fucked with their friends even though The Saints' started the war with Ronin, I never liked that line.

I always took that line to mean, "You don't drag outsiders into this" kind of a thing. Like... what did Aisha have to do with the Saints? She wasn't a member, she was just dating one. I mean I guess you could count that, but I don't think the Saints did. Then again the Boss is a fucking psychopath whose morals are essentially, "Don't piss me off."

This is incredibly awful. I haven't paid attention to this game since it's disastrous reveal at E3 but I didn't think it could get this bad.

THESE are threatening gangsters.

A San Francisco leather club doing cyberpunk Mad Max roleplay and a white female games journalist/"nerd culture writer"? I would run in fucking fear.

The straightest Bay Area resident and his boyfriend, some Urkel lookalike bowtie wearing hipster faggot who would've gotten bullied to death by literally any of GTA San Andreas's cast?

Missed opportunity to give Jaleel White some work.

I dunno about that first part, Boss had no issues torturing and crippling Matt and all he was to the Brotherhood was Maero's tattooist. Not gonna bring up his death since he put himself in that position.

I think SR 2 boss was just an amoral sociopath who uses backwards logic to justify his bloodlust which is why he's such a great character.

The Boss was referring specifically about Aisha.
Aisha was not an active Saint. Involving and murdering bystanders was a step too far.
The Boss would look like a piece of shit if there's a cutscene of them going to Japan and killing Akuji's wife and daughters.
This war was between the active members of the Saints and the Ronin.

It's why Jessica was fair game. She wasn't satisfied being the big man's girl and instead actively partook in the Brotherhood/Saints war.

Also the Boss delivering that line over their shoulder as fire and explosions rain around them is just so much cooler than "Get the fuck away from my friends" followed by a "oh yeah, I went there!" stare.

Agreed. Matt being maimed is the Boss being a hypocritical psychopath. But at least he didn't kill him when fishing for intel. Matt's death was pretty much a suicide, as Matt had to have known that someone putting Maero to the brink of death is more than a match for him, and seeing as how the only people who could help Matt were escaping, I have to conclude he knew his fate was sealed following his act of ultimate loyalty to his best friend.
Jesus Christ I hate how I can expand even more on SR2's writing compared to today's games despite it being a game that doesn't take itself all too seriously. Writing standards are in the absolute gutter now.

Or his speech at the end of Saints Row 2.
I keep forgetting I'm an autist who played Revelation in the early game as opposed to most people due to wanting to find Troy and Dex. I was hoping I'd get a cutscene of Troy trying to explain himself or Dex explaining what he'd been up to ever since (Remember Gat doesn't even tell you what Dex has done and you don't find out in the main storyline until Vogel relays it to the Boss in 'Room Service') and being re-recruited into the Saints.
Instead I got, well. the revelation and all that ensues.
As a result, my headcanon is that the knowledge of this betrayal by Julius & Troy, paired with Dex's desertion & attempted assassination on you is what causes the Boss to snap and go from ruthless gangbanger to psychopathic warlord who just happens to really like gangbanging. The truth that your friends whom you were earnestly ready to die for at any moment didn't really care about you or the family they fostered has made many a fictional character go insane. It also fits into why Gat and Boss are so fiercely loyal to each other akin to a bond shared by soldiers of war. (What's endearing to me about Gat's loyalty is that he doesn't have a pragmatic reason to stick by you. No one; not Julius, Troy, or Dex attempt anything on Gat's life, even after Gat attempts to kill Troy. Gat is either actually worth something to them or they don't consider him anywhere near the threat that Playa was. Gat has no real reason to stick by Playa outside of love for the Saints, yet he does. He sees in Playa what not even they see in themselves until later, thus why he follows Playa instead of leading even though he has veteran status between the two).

Thus, the Boss avows to rebuild the Saints to the ideals Julius could never follow through on. They didn't need Dex's tenacity or Troy's influence; they had learned all they needed to from them.
All they would need is a right-hand man who shared their vision, and a new generation of captains to bring his plans to fruition.
Carlos had the same rose-tinted love for the Saints as the Boss. It's always good to have dedicated idealists.
Pierce had similar thinking skills as Dex and it's always good to have a non-violent backup plan in case the fun option is no longer available.
Shaundi had the influence to match Troy's. There's very little in the criminal underworld she didn't either know about or couldn't get a hold of someone who did.

'tism, I know. But I really really like this fucking game.

This new "Saints Row" is nothing but cringe, garden variety Millennials eating memberberries trying to market to Gen Z, failing horribly. Gen Z in large embrace a gritty and emotional late 90's/Y2K aesthetic and they want their games to reflect the golden age of video games (1996-2012). The loud retard enbies in Gen Z are not who you want to market to, it's the silent majority of action, fantasy, and RPG lovers.

"OH kids love cats, remember nyan cat? Omg lyke helmets, fortnite, social justice, and friendship! LMFAO totz random." As a Zillenial caught between two worlds, they dropped the ball for both age groups to be marketed to. This is a crusty Millennial circle jerk. There are no tough Saints. The boss is a Mary Sue. There is no gang hierarchy of notable footsoldiers, lieutenants, leaders, branching cliques. The gang is cringe and so are the enemies. Gen Z wants RPGs and the action we grew up with back, not pandering. The devs were laid off in 2017 and replaced with a diversity committee.

I fucking hate the state of modern culture so fucking much I can't even put it into words.

Ever since Gamergate 2014, the game journos have tried to hijack the narrative and lie to the public about the filthy Western industry corruption and cover up stagnation with muh misogyny and altright conspiracy. Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z all have their share of loud, nonsensical tards and those of us left with sense need to keep hitting them where it hurts, in the wallet. Jim Boone, Emil Pagliarulo, Wu, Patrick Weekes, and most of Activision, EA, Blizzard, Square Enix, Dontnod, Deep Silver, MiHoYo, Epic Games... We need to set a good example for Gen Alpha to have good games. No wonder emulators are so popular these days! Saints Row will flop and still get Kotaku and Polygon asspats.

Oh hey you people also have seen the leaked shit...
This new woke row is extremely bad story-wise, gameplay wise is a mishmash and the problem innit is that it has Agents of Mayhem in that mix and agents of mayhem is a hero shooter so many things won't make sense, like FUCKING HEADSHOTS NOT INSTAKILLING.

During this time i was off i greatly missed you faggots, love you all (no homo).

The old games were really great at setting certain songs to gameplay bits. The Power song playing while assaulting a rooftop penthouse, the car karaoke, the I Need A Hero drive to save your crew, Don’t Want To Miss A Thing while climbing a rocket…solid music sync up.
You can't have that anymore because streamers market your game and turn all that off.

Is it also supposed to be badly delivered? Seriously all of the VA work sounds unnatural and off, like they brought their friends in to do it.
