Ok now I know these surgeons are trolling. Untreated fistula can result in infection and sepsis, and there are a lot of treatment options besides 'I poop into a bag now' surgery. Some can heal fully just by being cleaned out. Ileostomy is the nuclear option.
Not only that but ileostomies don’t have to be permanent - it’s not uncommon in Crohns/IBD cases, for example, to let the inflamed area have time to heal (and the Crohns to remiss) and then subsequently do a pull through and hook everything back up.
