where I live there is basically nothing to do. there are a lot of CA transplants who are confused by the situation but assume it's just like this because it's semirural. but people who grew up here know there used to be a waterpark, there used to be a roller rink, there used to be fun stuff happening downtown and at the mall, etc etc etc etc.

church youth groups have taken over a lot of this and churches have entire amusement parks built out on people's back 40s but they increasingly can't afford to run them.

local municipalities have pools and rec stuff but it's not remotely enough. there are constantly squabbles on reddit and nextdoor about how hard it is to get your kids into swim classes and summer day camps.

I never really connected it up but this is the end of circuses.

The small business everywhere are gone. The guides for hiking trails that you barely had to pay for are gone. Most small restaurants turned into overpriced food trucks and then died. Tourist busses are also gone. Most free watercabs too. Gone. All transplanted by housing projects or fucking Hyatt.

Ironically, the only places here still stable are churches. But a fuckton of them stopped food drives. Because there's a lot of homeless now.

Nevermind that this is only for a fraction of people with federal student loan debt. And that it assumes that there are no requirements for those that do qualify for forgiveness.

The students that graduate this year or subsequent years? Of course not. This is all a crux to dangle in fromt of people to get them to vote for them. Solving the problem of student loans was never an option.

And who pays for this? Obviously us.

And this assumes that Biden goes along with it considering the split of this in the Democrat party.

Something to keep in mind about student loan forgiveness: unless they roll out some kind of waiver, debt forgiveness counts as income. That makes it taxable.

You'd wind up owing taxes on the 10k debt forgiven.

Popular Leftist sentiment on Twitter and Reddit is that 10k is not enough.

The thought being that, somehow, students were totally not responsible for loans they agreed to for education that was financed by tax payers (through state and federal loans) and financial institutions (through private loans)

This won't really be a 'win' for them because it would *never have been enough* for their supporters.

Well... the problem is they didn't know the risks. Everyone was told that the only path was this one and it would be worth it. They were lied to. The debts never being paid back. So it's a hard landing or a soft landing. Forgiving/erasing the debt is the soft landing. Everything defaulting and collapsing the system is the hard one.
