We have some spare office computers at work so I'm trying my hand at installing gentoo on one of them just for fun. Kills downtime at work and the things were getting scrapped anyways. I only got so far today but overall the installation process was relatively reminiscent of when I manually installed artix. Gentoo seems interesting, part of why I'm doing this is just because it's really fun to learn about and I hope one day to be able to know enough to daily drive it with no problems.

It would be fun to write a little bash alias that just functions as a pseudo help menu, which just prints out the top 30 most useful commands and a brief description of what they do, so you don't have to look it up every time.

I think I’ve really been bitten by this. After getting rid of cinnamon on Mint (win7 look wasn’t for me, makes me feel old) I’m thinking of partitioning my drive yet again (every fucking install makes me do this manually, I’m clearly a sped) and having a go from scratch.
Or get another drive first. Might be safer and there’s room for a fourth.
I’m kinda a bit sad I didn’t get interested all those years ago when I knew some irl into it.

Try not to have a million os's on a given system, I think even having two should really be the max unless your running a server at least as far as usability goes. I personally just have 2 main systems one with manjaro linux for my coding ecosystem and one with windows for muh gaming.
A typical mistake people will make is being distro homeless, though you will be for a while till you find something that's right for you try not to be forever homeless.

you could try fedora linux, Linus Torvalds uses it and I used it for a good month or two on a shitty Dell optiplex
I loved it but switch cuz I need muh windows layout (I know now you can make ferdora more windows like but i didn't know that at the time)
There's also a lot of "trying to be Mac os" distros
like ubuntu budgie but i always found them to be too "baby's first linux" and there are less documentation on these lesser known os's, but im sure most ubuntu stuff would work.

If you're running a server you're only going to have one OS unless you like losing functionality when dual booting. Servers only get multiple OSes with VMs or Containers.
And personally almost all my desktop multi-OS is VMs as well. Sometimes for testing, sometimes for isolating one customer from another and sometimes to just see if GPU passthrough worked(it did, but was a pain in the ass).

I have heard that china has been trying to get away from using windows because it's an american company with backdoors. So I looked into what they use and they use Kylin os at a state level, it's skined such that 90% of people wouldn't even be able to tell it's not windows. it's debian based, so if that's your thing the ccp has got you.

Or just tell me, what would your ultimate linux laptop be like? what io would it have? what would the keyboard be like(would it have macro keys) ? what isn't in mainstream machines that you would want?
The Chinamen that make the motherboards are called 51nb. I believe they started with leaked Lenovo schematics and used those as a base for modification. This being China, it was presumably easy enough to find a place that would manufacture electronics of dubious provenance.
If you want a board or a system you're either going to have to get in on accursed redditor group-buys or find a reseller.
I've bought full builds from XY-Tech and I've been pretty pleased with them. The early batches of screen mods were a bit quirky and temperamental but on the whole the quality is good.
