This is true and a good thing. The worst I'll hire (if you've been working where I am a year even, you get on hiring committees) is a degreed engineer with heavy involvement with engineering design competitions. I can't risk having a theory only student. They are scum and can't do anything. They're also worse than useless because they think they're always right and don't learn.
I was involved in internal stuff at school and a large faction of professors openly were advocating for moving even further away from teaching what industry wanted. They're only interested in making more professors.

How can you add a bunch of highly paid professor positions to a mature academic field fairly quickly

Exploit a universalist ideology like wokeism to say this bullshit that is totally irrelevant to the discipline - like say engineering - is actually super relevant, the most relevant

Shit. I'd seen those floating around too and hoped they were fake.

What's the shelf life on the optics in question? American shit tends to be plagued by high maintenance requirements even when you're not in a warzone, and I'm guessing the Ukrainian capabilities for any kind of serious upkeep is effectively non-existent.

Funny part is, half the shit won't get sold by the holhols because it won't make it there in any meaning sense. All these giant piles of materiel need to be moved in theater by train or road, and the Russians have a nasty habit of dropping Kalibrs on anything that looks like a supply convoy (it's okay though, our experts assure me that they'll be out of precision munitions in...9 weeks ago.)

I get that we need to know theory, so you can know if you fucked up using the fancy tools that work better than us with calculus and a dream, but there were professors that flat out advocated to remove computer modeling from the curriculum because "that's a technician job"

Imo, lab research is science, used to make engineering tools and data, not engineering at all. Engineering is using tools, technology, and science to make a thing to serve a purpose.

So Biden's handlers are taking the opportunity, now that his approval rating is ticking up, to discontinue gov't subsidizing of at-home COVID tests and, probably, to ram through a new Iran Deal.

Also he's giving a primetime speech Thursday about safeguarding our democracy, so expect federal fuckery with the midterms.

Now. There are so many ways Biden can fuck up our foreign diplomacy still, so many more embassies to evacuate, ex-prime minsters to bully, serious threats to ignore.

Honestly I'm glad for the abject lesson in how poorly the country can be run
