Domina video game changes Name to Dominus and demands you respect their pronouns - Don't be a bigot!

No one here has properly detailed the background of this whole event, so here you go.

In 2020 the dev uploaded the upcoming DLC to the beta branch, which added 4 new classes on top of the 3 available in the base game, as well as some other bonus content.

People were happy with the new content. All you had to do to access it was join the open beta, which, as far as I know, still remains open to this day.

At that point, you wouldn't have known whether or not the DLC would remain free after release(despite what people may believe, free DLC is a thing), unless you outright asked the developer. I assume most people just went "wowie free!" without really reading into it. If I recall correctly, when you moused over one of the DLC classes in-game without the beta enabled, a text box would pop up telling you to switch to the beta branch if you wanted to unlock this content. It was not clear if bignic intended to paywall this later down the line.

In early march of 2022 over a thousand people review bombed the game because of the newly added, paid DLC.
Note that the initial flood of negative reviews has been marked by Valve as a non-legitimate review bomb, meaning it did not affect the rating of the game.

While some people were seething over bignic's political diatribes, the main focus was on how the part of the game that was previously free is seemingly being locked away behind a set of paid DLCs.

Several months later the dev drops this

Bignic decided to flag the, according to him, fraudulent, negative reviews until the jannies over at valve took his flagging privileges away. This resulted in the revival of this gay drama, which most likely would have otherwise stayed dead and buried.

His main arguments for the reviews being illegitimate were pointing to the beta announcement post I already attached, as well as the much more potent retort of "Source?".

A very important thing to mention is that, as far as I know, nothing actually got paywalled. I bought the game somewhere between 2020 and 2021, after the DLC was already in open beta. I quickly switched to the test branch. I missed the mention of this being a part of a future set of (paid?) expansions, evidently many people did. The thing is that even after the official release of several priced DLCs, I can still access the additional content just fine. I saw a screenshot of the dev's statement in a /v/ thread(if anyone could find it I would appreciate it), where he states that original beta testers will still be able to access the expansion content, but I did not receive and do not own any of the DLCs. This whole thing just seems like a result of really poor communication and general incompetence. I'm genuinely curious how many people would support this guy's antics if this didn't turn into a faggot culture war debate.

Not that relevant, but it's funny how people enjoy using serious legal terms like "fraud" and "slander" in regards to this shitshow.

Correct. Valve has a very wide structure where employees have a ton of freedom to do whatever and the only real authority is Gabe. In the case of Domina I will say that the dev has had a back and forth with Valve for months and was involved in some controversy where he was abusing the report system towards negative reviews (which is when Valve started taking action). I'm not agreeing with removing the game from Steam but the dev did push the limits of Steam support's patience (who are usually super relaxed).

Seems like the dev is a reasonable man dealing with unreasonable people, and brought to do unreasonable things. (and with a fair amount of aspergers)
Imo, this dude went digital killdozer. Found his way to make the statement he wanted, while he still could. I feel bad for the dude, and he seems pretty normal otherwise.

The comedy here is in the reviews, the jannys, and the seething troons.

http://dolphinbarn.com/ is their website, I've tried reaching out to the dev there, will report back if he responds with another platform to buy his game. As soon as I heard about it I was gonna go buy the game for people on steam only to find it was removed.
So far since it seems like it's just an activist trannyjanny, it might be worth it to open steam support cases if you own the game, or to email gaben@valvesoftware.com and pester him. The more people demanding valve stop censoring their platform like this, the better

TBH valve is at a crossroads, they're flirting with FOSS stuff with steamOS and proton, but they will need to eventually decide between becoming a totalitarian walled garden platform like what microsoft is trying to build, or they'll need to increase how open source their platform is. Open source the content moderation, the current system just creates nepotistic tranny cabals that flag what they hate. Valve seems to want to be able to open source the content CREATION and then just sit on that and make money off other people's work, which will eventually bite them in the ass when people realize we don't need them to sell our games.

Basically my thoughts. Steam certainly has some bullshit going on internally like any other company but the devs here are acting like absolute fools. Using patch notes to deliberately piss off lefties then crying foul when lefties get pissed off is lolcow-tier stupidity. If you pick a fight with your customers you should be prepared to get some review-bombing.

Besides, to my knowledge there's no instance of them letting this behavior slide in the past, so it's not overtly inconsistent yet. Unless we see the same behavior allowed from a lefty dev, I can't knock them for this.

If steam pulled the game it's likely because of this sort of shit. They've never removed a game over public outcry before, but they have yeeted games when the devs have been openly hostile to valve/gabe. Kiwis have been banned for less than this, can't say I feel too much sympathy.

The dev is absolutely fucking based though, just kind of a tard.

Oh yes supporting this game really shows the left how you're not gonna take it and it's definitely not slacktivism. The entertainment industry isn't gonna do shit about political issues other than shows and movies to milk them. Just because shows are more right wing doesn't mean your government is suddenly gonna be only catering to the right or making legislature favoring conservatives. Lobbying does that. So if you want to turn your money into legislature favoring you donate to someone lobbying for your causes.
