Disaster (Update: pilot in custody) Pilot threatens to crash small plane into Mississippi Walmart

Sept 3 (Reuters) - The pilot of a small plane has threatened to intentionally crash into a Walmart in Mississippi, local police said on Saturday, leading to an evacuation of the store.

The police department in Tupelo, Mississippi said they were notified about the situation earlier on Saturday and had been talking directly to the pilot.

"With the mobility of an airplane of that type the danger zone is much larger than even Tupelo," the police said in a statement on Facebook.

They added that Walmart (WMT.N) and a gas station had been evacuated and people had been dispersed.

Social media videos, which Reuters could not immediately verify, appeared to show a small plane flying in circles at a low altitude.

The Daily Journal said the pilot worked at the Tupelo regional airport and the plane was currently flying near a Toyota (7203.T) plant.

The guy is doing circles above it right now, at least Sky King just did his thing in the middle of nowhere.

Is our army drunk? Why has the f16 not shot him down yet?
Costs more to scramble a fighter than it does to just let Walmart's insurance take a hit. A single air to air missile probably exceeds the monetary value of any possible casualties. Also I don't know if there's even an air force base nearby.

People are saying that he's been flying around for 6 hours now and there are multiple different trajectories being posted as well as different names and profiles being linked to the man doing it by people jumping the gun so i'd be careful when trusting information as a fact so far, I'm just going by the different reports circulating around and trying to filter out bad info.

The unconfirmed reports state that he's this Cory Patterson guy

I'm no plane-ologist but wouldn't your average light aircraft just bounce off the roof of a sturdy building?
Yes, but, strip mall big-box stores are not sturdy, they're meant for cheap fast construction and maximum interior space, not durability. They're light steel and thin-walled masonry, especially the roofs, which are little more than corrugated metal and a roll of waterproofing.

A car can punch through the wall of one at 40, a light aircraft at double that is going right through.

From the local paper said:
UPDATE (9:43 a.m.):
Multiple law enforcement, airport and local authorities have identified the subject as Cory Patterson of Shannon.
Patterson is a 2011 Tupelo High School graduate.

A Cory Patterson believed to be the suspect posted on Facebook Saturday morning, "Sorry everyone. Never actually wanted to hurt anyone. I love my parents and sister this isn't your fault. Goodbye."

Since Skyking was mentioned, I came across this video last week of the aftermath of his crash:

If you shoot down an airplane, the wreckage is still going to land somewhere, and the guy is doing circles above a populated area. That's the last resort I'd assume, but ideally they could talk him down.
He's not flying directly above a populated area currently, far enough away to shoot him down. OUR PILOTS ARE DRUNK. Where is the f16? Shoot down that brony!

So what you’re saying is rich assholes could cause a lot of damage and the government won’t do anything? Typical.

This and shooting down a plane over a residential area isn't such a great idea

You also run into the fact that it's functionally impossible for military's jets to intercept some light civilian aircraft at all... because to engage them, they'd have to slow down to the point they stall and fall out of the sky....

Imagine trying to chase a tractor with a police car where the steering doesn't work if it goes slower than 40mph....

Its why they couldn't just follow D.B. Cooper and watch for him to bail out, the cruise speed of the airliner he was in was below the stall speed of the pursing aircraft, and it had to fly big, parabolic loops back and forth behind it and eventually gave up for fear of a collision in the dark.

I wonder if a man-pad would be cheaper. And easier too.
