Maria Clemente became last year the first transsexual deputy in the history of the Mexican Congress. She and her partner Salma Liebano were chosen as representatives of Morena and broke a ceiling for the LGBT community. However, a year later, the spotlight has returned to Clemente after sharing explicit pornographic videos on her Twitter account. The images have sparked controversy in Mexican politics and the opposition has called for her resignation. The deputy claims a “free sexuality”, while her party affirms that she will analyze the publications based on her code of ethics before making any decision.
The past legislative year was very turbulent for Clemente. In March he announced that he was leaving Morena due to the “hypocrisy” he had found within the party, however, some time later he returned to the bench and on his social media profile he has shown his support for Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, as the party’s candidate for the elections. of 2024. In an interview with EL PAIS in September 2021, Clemente assured that his objectives for the legislature were to modify the first article of the Constitution to make it more inclusive or regular to guarantee the labor rights of delivery men and app drivers.
Last week the deputy wrote a series of tweets about sexuality, in which she said that she had chosen to be faithful to her partner after having a date on a platform. However, in recent days the content of the political representative has escalated and she has shared several explicit videos of blowjobs or half-naked dances under the label “Trans is hot” (“What is trans is sexy”, in its translation into Spanish).
Clemente has received harsh criticism for these images, among which there are clearly transphobic insults, which only attack her status as a trans woman. She has defended the diffusion: “It is my body, it is my decision, my body is mine, only mine, I have autonomy. My body does not belong to the state. The deputy has pointed out that she also performs sex work and that spreading it on her personal social networks has nothing to do with her legislative work.
From Morena they have indicated: “We are going to attend to him in accordance with what is established by the General Law of the Mexican Congress and also in relation to the Code of Ethics.” Ignacio Mier, coordinator of the Morena bench, has also indicated that it will be analyzed within the parliamentary group to issue “an opinion with greater legal certainty.” “We are going to see the scope so as not to violate any right or make any early judgment”, he has indicated.
Clemente, 37, entered Congress via the party’s proportional representation, that is, citizens do not vote for her directly, but rather she is elected by the number of total votes cast, in this case, for Morena. With a degree in Business Administration, Clemente worked as an application manager for a year and a half before beginning the legislature.
In the 2021 elections there were around 40 candidacies of trans people and Clemente assured EL PAIS that having been elected was “very cool” for “being a voice of a population in a place as important as Congress, where it is regulated” . He stated that his priorities were: “Attend to my colleagues, promote an agenda in favor of sexual diversity and shield the integration of the trans population from the construction of a legal structure.”
In Mexico, violence against transsexual women does not let up. In the past few weeks, four women have been killed because of their condition. The Transgender organization placed Mexico as the second country with the most homicides of trans women in the world, only behind Brazil, while the NGO Letter S records 270 trans people murdered from 2017 to 2021 in the country, of which 40 of the victims they were subjected to multiple forms of violence such as beatings, sexual violence and signs of torture. In this context, the election of Clemente and Lievano in the Mexican Chamber of Deputies represented a giant step in respecting the rights of this community.
