Sonic 2006 was announced as a soft reboot for the Sonic franchise. The official quote that has crystalized in my brain was “we’re treating it as if it was the first Sonic game on the Sega Genesis.” In the original, scrapped pitch for Sonic 1 in 1990, he had a human girlfriend, Madonna. She was scrapped because Sega of America wanted Sonic to have a different kind of appeal. Obviously, Madonna lived on through Princess Elise. Not in exact content (or context), but in spirit. And people still were not ready for an adult human woman having any kind of romantic involvement with a three foot tall rodent. The original joke for Madonna was probably supposed to be a riff on Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which came out only a couple of years before the production for Sonic began. Madonna was probably supposed to be Sonic’s Jessica Rabbit.
But Jessica and Roger’s relationship is a joke. They’re cartoon characters in a human world and it’s a riff on a wider joke trope of a total dork having a beautiful partner. But Sonic wasn’t meant to be a comedy. It did not have very many jokes in it. And Roger’s whole thing is that he’s this clumsy, suspender-wearing doofus, whereas Sega wanted Sonic to be the lead singer in a rock and roll band. It just did not work. If Sega went with their original pitch for Sonic (Madonna, rock band, etc.) they probably would have ended up like, I dunno NEC. Sonic would probably be spoken about in the same breath as guys like Bonk. The first few games might have done well, but longevity would be a much greater struggle.
