Jim Sterling / James "Stephanie" Sterling / James Stanton/Sexton & in memoriam TotalBiscuit (John Bain) - One Gaming Lolcow Thread

I think the "I wrote a script for a Jimquisition but can't be assed to record it" angle has some merit there. That thing reads like a JQ episode without adlibbed lines and sketches.
"Dinsey Made A Game As Joyless And Hopeless As They Are [The Jimquisition]"

The episode would go on to be about the evils that Disney commits that literally everyone already knows, effectively being an episode of ClownfishTV except instead of being run by a husband and wife with kids who have literally invested in Disney while also having worked with the company in the past (allegedly, but I'd bet he's telling the truth given how much Disney hates them) and so would on multiple levels care about what they do, it'd be a "husband" and "wife" complaining that the house of mouse didn't stop the evil Facist state of Florida from banning kids have life-altering conversations at school without parents knowing about it.

While it might be on brand, it's maybe a bit optimistic to think Jim is putting in effort suddenly to save his dying career. I like the HMRC dodging theory more because it's more asinine....Then again, it could also be that Jim is seeing 800k approach and realises he will be mocked and maybe he can stave it off if he does the thing that made those back gamers subscribe in the past.

The sudden realisation that what made him popular is writing about video games and so he's quickly rushing back to that in the vain hope to preserve his hemorrhaging fanbase and (more importantly) income. Maybe him being invited to write some in-game fluff for Vampire Survivors has something to do with it.
I've mentioned before that if Jim has any passion left in him at all his best bet would have been to go the route of either a breadtube-esque proper video essayist in the style of Jacob Geller in particular, or one of those video creators who goes extremely in depth into a particular game or videogame personality, for example Mandalore Gaming or Ahoy (who just released such a video about UFO: Enemy Unknown that is light years ahead of anything that Jim has ever produced in terms of editing, narrative and research). Like them or hate them these kinds of content producers have deservedly gained considerable followings in recent years with the promise of things like interesting and well made perspectives on specific parts of video game history, like Geller can easily hit a million views per video now if he's hit upon a good topic, same with Mandalore where he's not even dependent on the games he covers being particularly timely or popular anymore, like his last major project was the Marathon series, people watch him because he goes super in depth, his videos are very watchable and he's carved out a niche for himself appealing to people who are curious about clunky old PC games.

None of these people are hard up for money either, they have healthy patreon support in addition to whatever they make from YouTube directly, and in addition to that their promise of a certain standard of quality means that they don't have to be too worried about deadlines, trying to put out a video week after week like Jim, fuck Ahoy only put out 2 videos this year. You'd think this would appeal to Jim instead of his floundering bullshit where he ends up just being a shallow twitter timeline recap once a week where he hits the sweet spot of having absolutely nothing in depth or original to say about the stuff he covers from the lack of research and interest he has in the topic, while also managing to not even be timely enough in putting out his content to hit the ever changing algorithms of places like Youtube. As has been endlessly repeated he's just a slower, shittier version of YongYea or Upperechalongamers.

But he's so stuck in his ways I can't see any major change at this point, he just doesn't have the temperament or work ethic for a major project that might breath some life back into his channel, and he just bitches that its not 2014 anymore and thinks its the rest of the world's fault he hasn't changed significantly beyond putting on the wig and lipstick. I'm reminded some years ago he did a video trying to talk about the deeper themes of Dark Souls (which is already an incredibly played out topic, but this is Jim so, you know, baby steps), and when that didn't get the traction he wanted he gave up immediately and whined about his audience not wanting new content. Its always the same story, he won't make potentially hard but necessary changes that might give him and his channel a new leash on life, and instead just blames everything and everyone around him.

Like at the very least, why not turn his channel into something more wrestling or (shudder) LGBT activism related, since those are the things he actually seems to care about now?

I gotta give Jim some credit, he managed to do it two days after YoungYea did, but then I gotta take it away when he put the game his video would be related to as the first Bayonetta and not the one people are wanting to buy.

There's no need for a recap because there's really nothing of note here. Here's what matters:
  • Written reviews are back. I may or may not take the piss out of these in the future
  • Says nothing on the controversy you haven't heard.
  • To Jim's credit, actually acknowledges this is more of an industry problem than just a platinum/Nintendo problem
  • Jim also mentions that, while it doesn't take the companies off the hook, the job actually paid the average.
This is honestly one of Jim's better episodes in a while when you ignore that he still pretends that dresses and makeup look good on him.

Because, and I know this will be hard to fathom, any content Jim made on those topics would be even less competent and informed than his video game stuff. Despite claiming to hate them, Jim has played a lot of video games and like most of us in this thread is old enough to remember when they weren't the vapid money-hoovers most AAA efforts are today. That's how he's still capable of sleepwalking through the JQ week to week: he knows just enough to sound like he has a point to anyone who knows less than he does.

In contrast, what kind of content could he do about LGBT issues? He gets all his opinions from Twitter and I maintain his non-hetero tendencies are entirely performative; his content would be on par with Peetz. As for wrasslin...we've all seen the footage. We know he's technically inept and none of his events are high profile, so what kind of draw could he generate? Best case scenario he could interview Simon Miller and get him to carry the show.

Speaking of Simon Miller, who did or does work for WhatCulture, that's where I see Jim ending up: Just another talking head presenting generic 'Top 10 Shotguns in FPS Games' clickbait videos for a corporate channel where all he has to do is stand in front of a green-screen and read the script that's been prepared for him.

You have to hand it to Ahoy, he started out only doing Call of Duty content but could see the writing on the wall and broadened his content. Jimmy boy couldn't see the writing if he had access to Hubble.

Simon at least seems to take his wrestling career seriously though, rather than an excuse to play out his woman beating fetish, and has the physique of a wrestler rather than Mr Blobby.

An important thing to realize about Jim Sterling. All the other distasteful qualities such as his gluttony or lust, or LGBT pandering madness are just layers of his persona - At his core Jim is just fucking lazy. He is incapable of actual change so he'd rather get stuck and bogged down repeating something his viewers have heard form him and other Youtubers so much that they just stop watching.

That's why he fell in the first place, he just wouldn't shut the fuck up about the same thing week after week after week. Cause he just couldn't be bothered to put in the work and research something new and groundbreaking himself.

It's also why he can't switch to activism cause on that saturated field he's going to get even less attention repeating what everyone says.

Now, did Jim scrap/push the video intended for this week because he felt it was immensely important to cover this topic as soon as possible, or had he not done any fucking work yet and was blessed with decent timing so he could have a video idea for this week?

I know where my money is.
I am wondering if he scrapped it and made Justin rush this together because he watches the Farms thread on him and saw me say that I bet he does a video on Bayonetta but takes 2 weeks to make it :D

You have to hand it to Ahoy, he started out only doing Call of Duty content but could see the writing on the wall and broadened his content. Jimmy boy couldn't see the writing if he had access to Hubble.
Another person that did something like this is Invicta, he started off doing bland videogame content, got increasingly specialized into Total War games, and eventually turned into a history documentary channel with a particular focus on Rome. See Jim, its not that scary, people can change their content into something more suitable for them over time and it still works out!

Its almost insulting to see Ahoy compared to Jim, Ahoy puts out like two-ish documentary quality videos a year basically all on his own while Jim shits out a JQ every week that he doesn't edit and was likely recorded the day before release regurgating the same tired topics and yet earns five times as much as Ahoy does.

Jim must be utterly creaming himself over the recent Bayonetta controversy where the voice actress was only offered $4,000 for voicing the entire game.

He can mention capitalism, sexism, anti-Japanese stuff, voice acting (he's done some voice acting in games previously so I am expecting "I did 10 lines and got more than this!"), Bayonetta being a sexualised game, Nintendo...

This is the perfect storm for his videos but the real question is which Jimquisition will be about it? I am going to be generous and say Oct 31st but I think tomorrow's will have a quick voice over saying "fuck Hideki Kamiya and fuck Nintendo"

I finally watched the latest Jimquisition and he really did say "I've been paid a lot more" and "Nintendo and Platinum, fuck the pair of them" which pretty much includes the last line I mentioned :D Ended on capitalism, too.

Come on, Jim - this is why your views are tanking. It's all so predictable that we no longer even need to watch the videos!

Yeah, Jim earns 5 time's as much, but eats 6 times as much and wastes 10 times as much money. Ahoy also doesn't roleplay as a woman and/or a leaking condom to deal with a midlife crisis, so who's really winning here?

I just remembered why i don't check in on the Jimster anymore. Its depressing to see him have been right about everything, then either renounced because hes a faggot now, or ignored because of sheer apathy from people who don't know or care about anything. Even more depressing to see how he also stopped caring once he noticed the line consistently move past what he thought the worst was less than a year ago every single year.

Ultimately i think he trooned out because of a lack of attention, funnily enough. He was right, he knew he was right, yet unending apathy from uncaring consoomers consistently left his warnings about the industry totally ignored. Not to mention how he's basically blacklisted from the industry for being so uppity, all his contacts are either gone or leaving. Not surprised he seems so bitter all the time, I'd be too if i was Gaming's Alex Jones.

Alex Jones is gonna fall over the cuckoo house too, same as Nick Fuentes did. It's what happens when you pour yourself into something you find important, a scorching spotlight shines on you, you lose all your opportunities and at the end nobody cares. You've achieved nothing, you will have nothing and people will laugh every time your name is brought up for the rest of time. Fucking miserable innit?
It doesn't happen to everyone. Someone I know that has kept relatively the same attitude and has made mostly true points about certain parts of this industry is Ross Scott from Accursed Farms, railing against bad game design choices and 'games as a service' existing at all, has done so for years. I suppose in his case he hasn't had a spotlight on himself as a personality in years, the closest that got was when he was doing Freeman's Mind, but he still gets hundreds of thousands of views in many video types. TLDR don't go full doomer and this won't happen.

Jim takes such a non-stance on this, its clear the problem lies with the union doing a terrible job negotiating for it's members but Jim wouldn't dare badmouth a union so he tries to make it about how its all the evil publisher (are they responsible for that stuff?) that is lowballing the VAs.
