Silent Hill

Makes you feel empty, doesn't it? This series deserves a dignified funeral.

Hopefully this is the rumored Silent Hill 2 remake. That first line in the tweet is a variation of the first line in Mary's letter to James ("In my restless dreams, I see that town")
Meh.

Remake = Double-dipping profits without doing any actual work

I can't lie and say I wouldn't be interested to see Soylent Hill: Revengeance follow the story of an absolute dipshit who took a wrong turn on his road trip to the anime convention at neverland and had to deal with monsters given the personified qualities of "having to pay rent," "having to get a job," "basic adult responsibilities," and so-on.
That would unironically be brilliant as a setup for a silent hill game. It's almost too ballsy for current era but Just seeing a Redditor completely divorced from realty forced into confronting the truth of themselves and world would be sick shit.

Apparently im hearing indications we are getting another Silent hill demo/teaser like PT.

Well, I mean. That's Silent Hill 3. Except that game came out when being a teenager meant you were turning into an adult, with the game's themes hidden behind that rusty exterior involving a lot of the stresses that come with becoming a woman / adult and ideas of parenthood / responsibility more generally.

Today, being a teenager is just the step in life before becoming a manchild, although I can't lie and say I wouldn't be interested to see Soylent Hill: Revengeance follow the story of an absolute dipshit who took a wrong turn on his road trip to the anime convention at neverland and had to deal with monsters given the personified qualities of "having to pay rent," "having to get a job," "basic adult responsibilities," and so-on.
As someone who actually was a teenager when that game came out you totally nailed it. If a game like Silent Hill 3 came out today then it probably focus on "modern" teenage problems like they can't decide what pronouns they want to go by, what Instagram filter to use, worrying about how offensive a tweet they sent out might have been, etc.

I just want a scary game. I feel like a remake or even a new installment would move away from the fixed camera angles, low draw distances, and claustrophobic environments, because hardware a lot better… but those are what the games scary.

Music is extremely important too. In fact, none of the games would be scary without their soundtracks. You'd need people who are masterful at twisted, unnerving sound design and a composer on par with Akira Yamaoka. Most of the horror of P.T was in its sounds.

Clunky, cumbersome combat is okay too. We don't need another action game with horror elements. It's not enough to have a Silent Hill coat paint if you ignore the foundations that made it horrifying.
For what it's worth, Akira came back to make the music for the silent hill chapter of dead by daylight.

Silent Hill 3 was my first Silent Hill so I love it more than it probably deserves so if they could stay away from that one I'd appreciate it.

This is really terrible news cause the twitter post makes reference to restless dreams which means it might be a remake of 2. I really don't give a shit about the pachinko machine fiasco because Silent Hill had the luxury of staying relatively dead as an iconic franchise but, of course Konami chose to exhume the corpse to rape it again. What makes the original games so special was when they were made and Team Silent. No sequel or remake will ever hold a candle to Team Silent's creativity and talent. Leave the series alone and make your own shitty ripoff and forget about trying to recapture the magic because you can't.

Yes, I find that it's better to follow the creative team that you like rather than the franchise itself, which is why I'm keeping an eye on Slitterhead (Team Silent people) and Callisto Protocol (original dead space devs) instead of these remakes and new titles created by devs lacking a good track record. I might want a new Silent Hill, but not if it's another piece of shit like several of the sequels that have been made.

I've never given too much thought into it. But the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox generation was the last good gen for every genre. There has not been many times since then when a game could make me go "damn that was something", especially when it came to horror. Manhunt, Silent Hill, Twisted Metal Black Black, Resident Evil, Hunting Ground; Rule of Rose and many that I'm forgetting were not only memorable but it showed that companies where looking to bring NEW experiences.

All in all. You bet for sure that this sperg is going to upload a 7 hour video on why Jame's jacket should be green instead of blue in the remake because of symbolism.

Even though a new silent hill game could come after 10 years, I really don’t feel a thing about it. Is it disinterest possibly?

Horror games may as well only really exist in that generation. 5th gen horror was janky, 7th and beyond is lackluster YouTube reaction fodder. And even then, the latter half of Silent Hill's releases on PS2 were... not so great. I guess it was just a perfect point in time to where technology was advanced enough to give us games with characters that exhibited realistic body language and facial expressions, but Clown World hadn't yet set in.

Speaking of which, it makes me chortle to think about how the most popular horror game of last gen was a cheesy game about Showbiz Pizza animatronics developed by a devout Christian man that just sort of stumbled into being a legend of the video game industry. FNAF's no Silent Hill, but God bless Scott Cawthon.

JRPGs sucked shit hard during that generation. I like to rank the best generations for JRPGs as 4th (SNES), 8th (PS4), and 5th (PS1), in that order.

Who's the faggot in the picture?

Not sure if ive made this post before, couldnt find it, but basically here's the wrap about why SH should stay dead:

There is nothing left to do with the franchise. It's over, son. When people think about Silent Hill, what comes to mind is either a story about someone facing their deepest demons, or a story about being trapped in a living representation of someone else's mind. Unfortunately, both plotlines have already peaked from SH1 to SH4 with James's and Alessa's stories, respectively.

Everything that came after that kept trying to replicate past successes, some were wins, others not.

Thing is, the attempts didn't stop with the series's death. I rag a lot on them, but this is good enough a reason for me; Indie horrors continued on with the classic SH tropes (repressed memories, guilt, muh symbolism) and some cranked the body horror up a notch, too. What this means, is that right now, there's an oversaturation of SH style horror, and they're all trying to be the next SH2, some attempts better than others, but still, it comes back to what i said before: That idea, that story, it peaked with SH2, and it probably won't get surpassed.

These niggers are planning to revive a series that's better off dead, only to sell you a product that's no different to the hundreds of "inspired by Silent Hill" titles already in the market. They're gonna be selling you a name, cause otherwise it's gonna be a very unremarkable title if the previous leaks with the frumpy chick are real.

You wanna leave an impression with a new SH? Gameplay-wise there's not much more to be done, i'd even argue that removing the smoother controls and improved combat from later entries would be a good idea. But what you really need here is a shocking storyline.

My nigga Michale Wade above claimed that a story about some soy chugger trying to cope with the reality of an adult life would be a ballsy move and a good setup for a Silent Hill title, but i'mma put my dick on the desk here.

You want balls? You want a ballsy story?

Then make your protagonist a pedophile.

Hear me out here, if we're talking Silent Hill, where almost every protagonist has a dark secret hidden in the back, giving your protag one of the worst, most reviled aspects a human being can be would make for some interesting ideas.

Your character can be a decent person on the surface, they are sincere, kind, selfless, the kind of person you want to see survive... But they also happen to be attracted to children. They know it's wrong, they don't want to be that person... Yet, they are. And that will never change.

Fuck it, make your pedo protagonist a woman. Play up the emotional angle, it's not just about sex, she *loves* that particular boy, she wants the forbidden fruit while desperately beating herself up for having thoughts.

That'd be an idea for a protagonist and general plot, but what about the other iconic SH staple, the Otherworld?

Shattered Memories had the right idea by switching stuff up. Everyone remembers the fleshy, crimson rusted mechanic otherworld, but i think basing it around the protagonist itself in some way would help give your game more of an identity.

For this specific idea, i'd go with an Otherworld based on lights and shadows, the darkness being your protag's haven, as the light shining on them reflects their biggest fear of being "exposed". Not to mention it could give some interesting artistic decisions...

In the end, i believe this could be a great idea for another SH game. Ideally, the series would remain dead, but if they really have to bring it back, i say go balls out and make people talk.

Saw this earlier, take it with a grain of salt:

And for those who do not know anything about the upcoming projects, some images and informations have already been leaked, in fact the projects should be three, a new entire game by a Japanese Developer, a minor episodic game to entrusted to Annapurna (those of Stray etc.), the remake of Silent Hill 2 by Bloober Team (The Medium etc.)

I've never given too much thought into it. But the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox generation was the last good gen for every genre.
^This. There have been some great games released since then, but the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox generation was one of the best (if not the best) generations in gaming.

It's gonna suck. The only optimism I can muster is the possibility that one of the games will be made by SadSquare Studio beacuse Visage kinda proved they know horror better than 99% of the industry.

A sperg at the head of the jewtube channel Twin Perfect. Guy is a mega autist who thinks he is an authority on everything SH related and will get irrationally angry if you disagree with him to the point his partner told him to fuck off.

Won't let me quote for some reason so sorry about the double post.
You can tell the guy is a mega autist, not because of his dead eyed thousand yard stare that stares into your soul in that pic, but because he was actually autistic enough to buy Silent Hill Downpour and that POS HD collection.

I can see how people might not like 5th gen horror but I think it was great. Something about the "abstract" visuals and likely unintentional jank contributed to their horror. It's maybe the only genre that benefits from those things.

Not to drag this off-topic but how the hell did you place 8th gen over 5th gen for JRPGs? I'm legit baffled and not in like a condescending way, I just genuinely don't understand.
